.45 ACP Pistols
The .45 ACP has been an American standard since John Browning developed it for the 1911 pistol over a century ago, and it remains one of the most proven defensive and target shooting calibers available. It fires a large-diameter, heavy bullet at moderate velocity, delivering authoritative terminal performance from quality hollow point loads. Whether you prefer a classic 1911, a modern polymer-framed .45, or a double-stack platform with higher capacity, we carry a full selection of .45 ACP pistols from all major manufacturers.

1911 Platforms
The 1911 is the classic .45 ACP platform and one of the most refined trigger systems in all of handgunning. A well-built 1911 offers a crisp, consistent single-action trigger that most shooters find easier to shoot accurately than double-action or striker-fired alternatives. Springfield Armory, Colt, Kimber, and Rock Island Armory all produce quality 1911s across a wide price range. The single-stack magazine limits capacity to 7–8 rounds, which is the primary practical disadvantage versus modern double-stack platforms. See our 1911 page for the full selection.
Modern .45 ACP Pistols
Modern polymer-framed .45 ACP pistols offer higher capacity than the 1911 with the lower maintenance and simpler manual of arms of a striker-fired design. The Glock 21 holds 13 rounds of .45 ACP in a full-size frame; the Glock 30 offers a compact version with 10-round capacity. The S&W M&P 45 and Springfield Armory XD-M in .45 ACP are strong polymer-framed alternatives with good ergonomics and reliable track records. These platforms are well-suited for shooters who want .45 ACP performance with the simplicity of a modern service pistol.
Capacity Considerations
The .45 ACP’s larger case means fewer rounds per magazine compared to 9mm in the same frame size. Single-stack 1911s typically hold 7–8 rounds; compact double-stack .45s hold 10–12; full-size double-stack platforms like the Glock 21 hold 13. For most defensive applications, 7–13 rounds is adequate; the concern is more relevant in competition or scenarios where extended engagement is anticipated. If round count is the primary concern, a 9mm with 15–17 rounds offers a meaningful capacity advantage in the same frame size.
.45 ACP for Defense and Target
The .45 ACP performs well in both defensive and target shooting applications. For defensive use, Federal HST 230gr and Speer Gold Dot 230gr are the most recommended loads, with consistent expansion and penetration across published test data. For bullseye and precision target shooting, the .45 ACP 1911 is the traditional platform, with a trigger refinement ceiling that rivals any production pistol available. The combination of excellent trigger, good sights, and the .45’s relatively soft recoil impulse makes a tuned 1911 one of the most accurate pistols available for precision work.
Top .45 ACP Platforms
For classic 1911 buyers, the Springfield Armory Loaded 1911 and Colt Government Model represent the best value at their respective price points. For modern polymer .45s, the Glock 21 is the most proven option with the deepest aftermarket. For carry in .45, the Springfield XD-S and Glock 30S offer compact options that remain shootable. For competition, a tuned 1911 from Springfield, Colt, or Kimber in the $800–$1,500 range provides a strong factory foundation. The Rock Island Armory GI 1911 represents the most accessible entry point into the platform.
