Tikka T1x

The Tikka T1x is a Finnish-made bolt-action rimfire rifle built on the same action geometry as Tikka’s centerfire T3x series—giving .22 LR and .17 HMR shooters a rimfire trainer that handles identically to a full-power hunting or precision rifle. Manufactured by SAKO in Finland and available in the MTR (Multi-Task Rimfire) configuration, the T1x delivers centerfire-grade fit and finish in a rimfire package that serious shooters and competitive rimfire athletes have embraced since its 2018 introduction.

What Makes the Tikka T1x Different From Other Rimfire Bolt Guns?

Most rimfire bolt-action rifles are designed from the ground up as rimfire-only platforms. The T1x takes a different approach: its action dimensions, trigger geometry, stock proportions, and scope rail height are matched to Tikka’s T3x centerfire series. A shooter who trains on a T1x and transitions to a T3x in 6.5 Creedmoor or .308 Win handles an identical manual of arms. The single-stage trigger is adjustable from 2 to 4 lbs and breaks cleanly out of the box. The cold-hammer-forged barrel produces consistent accuracy, with most T1x rifles grouping under ¾″ at 50 yards with quality ammunition.

T1x Caliber Choice: .22 LR vs. .17 HMR

The T1x is offered in both .22 LR and .17 HMR. The .22 LR version is the more popular choice—ammunition is inexpensive and widely available, making it ideal for high-volume practice and competition. The .17 HMR variant extends effective range significantly, pushing a 17-grain bullet at 2,550 fps for flat trajectory and reliable expansion on small game out past 150 yards. Both use a 10-round detachable rotary magazine. If your primary goal is training and volume shooting, choose .22 LR. If you want a dual-purpose small game and varmint rifle with the T1x’s precision platform, .17 HMR is compelling.

Is the T1x Accurate Enough for Rimfire Competition?

The T1x MTR (Multi-Task Rimfire) is built specifically with competition in mind. Its threaded barrel accepts suppressors and muzzle devices, and the chassis-style stock provides a flat forend for bags and rests. In NRL22 and Precision Rifle Series rimfire competitions, the T1x is a common choice among competitors who want a factory gun capable of competing with custom rimfire builds. Out of the box, it typically shoots ½″–¾″ groups at 50 yards with match-grade .22 LR ammunition like CCI Standard Velocity or Lapua Center-X. For most club-level competition, no gunsmithing is required—trigger adjustment and a quality rimfire scope are the only upgrades most shooters need.

What Scopes Work Best on the T1x?

The T1x ships with a Picatinny rail that accepts standard 30mm and 1-inch rings. For competition and precision rimfire work, a parallax-adjustable scope set to 50 yards is essential—the Vortex Diamondback Tactical 4–16x44 and Leupold VX-3HD 3.5–10x40 are popular matches. The scope rail sits at the same height as the T3x centerfire, which is a deliberate design choice—if you run the same rings and scope on both rifles, the cheek weld and sight picture are consistent between the two. For general plinking, a fixed 4x or low-power variable is more than adequate.

T1x vs. Ruger Precision Rimfire: Which Should You Buy?

The Ruger Precision Rimfire (RPR) and Tikka T1x MTR are the two most recommended factory precision rimfire rifles. The RPR offers a folding stock, more aggressive chassis ergonomics, and broader aftermarket support at a slightly lower price. The T1x wins on trigger quality, barrel quality, and the centerfire-matching manual of arms—it genuinely feels like a shrunken T3x. For a shooter whose primary goal is training for centerfire precision rifle competition, the T1x’s identical feel to the T3x is a meaningful advantage. For a shooter who wants a standalone rimfire competition or hunting rifle and isn’t tied to the Tikka centerfire ecosystem, either is an excellent choice.
