Fire Starting
Fire is the most critical survival skill, and reliable fire-starting tools belong in every pack. Ferrocerium rods (ferro rods) work wet, in wind, and at altitude where lighters fail. A ferro rod paired with a fixed blade knife that has a 90-degree spine creates a dependable fire-starting system with no moving parts. UCO and Light My Fire make quality ferro rods. Waterproof matches and a butane lighter provide backup. Tinder — dry material that catches a spark easily — is the limiting factor in wet conditions; WetFire tinder cubes light in rain and float on water.
Water Filtration
In a survival situation, water contamination is a more immediate threat than dehydration. Sawyer Squeeze and LifeStraw are the two most popular field water filters, both removing bacteria and protozoa to safe drinking levels. Sawyer’s Squeeze system works inline with hydration bladders and can filter up to 100,000 gallons. Chemical treatment (iodine tablets or Aquatabs) is a lightweight backup for any kit. For base camp and long-duration stays, a gravity filter system processes larger volumes without pumping effort.
Emergency and First Aid
A well-stocked first aid kit and a basic signaling kit belong in every hunting pack and vehicle. Tourniquet application (CAT or SOFTT-W), wound packing, and chest seal application are the most important trauma interventions for hunting accidents and gunshot wounds. North American Rescue and HSGI make IFAKs (Individual First Aid Kits) pre-loaded with appropriate trauma supplies. A signal mirror and whistle weigh almost nothing and extend your rescue probability significantly in wilderness emergencies.
