Springfield Armory 1911 Garrison

The Springfield Armory 1911 Garrison Target takes the proven Garrison platform — forged carbon steel slide and frame, match-grade stainless barrel — and adds a fully adjustable rear sight for competition-oriented shooters who need precise windage and elevation control. Available in both .45 ACP (7+1) and 9mm (9+1), both versions wear checkered thinline wood grips and a high-visibility white dot front sight on a 5” barrel. Announced at the 2026 NRA Annual Meeting, the Garrison Target is Springfield’s most precision-ready production 1911 at a production 1911 price point.

Garrison Target vs. Standard Garrison: What’s Different?

The standard Garrison ships with fixed GI-style sights — functional and snag-free for carry, but limited for precision shooting. The Garrison Target replaces those with a fully adjustable steel rear sight unit offering full windage and elevation adjustment, paired with a high-visibility white dot front sight. The rear face is black and serrated to reduce glare and sharpen the sight picture. Everything else — the forged steel construction, match-grade barrel, and classic aesthetics — carries over unchanged. The Garrison Target is the Garrison built for the range and the competition stage rather than the holster.

Garrison Target Specs: Construction, Barrel, and Capacity

Both the .45 ACP and 9mm Garrison Target models are built on forged carbon steel frames and slides for maximum durability and the classic 1911 feel. The 5” barrel is match-grade forged stainless steel for tight tolerances and consistent accuracy. The .45 ACP feeds from a 7+1 steel magazine; the 9mm from a 9+1 stainless steel magazine. Checkered thinline wood grips keep the grip profile slim while providing a secure hold. The overall package is a full-size, full-weight Government-frame 1911 built to the same standards as Springfield’s more expensive custom-shop offerings.

Which Should You Choose: Garrison Target in .45 ACP or 9mm?

The .45 ACP Garrison Target is the choice for traditionalists and USPSA Single Stack or IDPA ESP competitors where .45 is the power-factor-compliant option. The 9mm version is the better pick for high-volume training — cheaper ammo, lighter recoil, two additional rounds in the magazine, and easier major power factor qualification in Production divisions. Both barrels are match-grade and accuracy potential is equivalent. If you’re shooting for enjoyment and range work, the 9mm makes more practical sense. If you’re shooting a discipline that rewards or requires .45, that’s your answer.

Is the Garrison Target Suitable for Competition Shooting?

Yes, with some caveats. The adjustable rear sight and match-grade barrel make the Garrison Target genuinely competitive in entry-level and club-level 1911 competition. For IDPA ESP or CCP divisions, or USPSA Single Stack, the Garrison Target qualifies out of the box. Serious USPSA Limited or Open shooters will eventually want a higher-end platform, but the Garrison Target is a strong starting point that won’t hold a skilled shooter back at the club level. The adjustable sights are the key upgrade over the standard Garrison that make this viable for competition — the ability to dial in windage and elevation precisely is essential when shooting for score.

Garrison Target vs. Rock Island Armory 1911: Budget vs. Springfield Quality

Rock Island Armory 1911s are popular entry-level options and reliable shooters, but they use cast frames rather than forged steel construction. The Springfield Garrison Target uses forged carbon steel throughout — a meaningful difference in long-term durability and dimensional consistency under sustained fire. The match-grade stainless barrel on the Garrison Target also delivers tighter tolerances than RIA’s standard barrels. For shooters who plan to put thousands of rounds through a competition 1911, the Springfield’s forged construction and match barrel justify the premium over cast-frame alternatives.
