Gun Oil vs. CLP: Which Do You Need?

Gun oil is a dedicated lubricant — applied to moving metal parts to reduce friction and prevent wear without cleaning or corrosion protection. CLP (cleaner-lubricant-protectant) is a three-in-one product that cleans carbon fouling, lubricates moving parts, and protects against rust in a single application. For routine maintenance where the firearm isn’t heavily fouled: CLP is the most efficient choice. For deep cleaning after high round counts or extended storage: dedicated solvent first, then oil. For firearms stored in safes in humid climates, a dedicated rust prevention product or vapor corrosion inhibitor provides additional protection. Stainless steel firearms are more corrosion-resistant but not immune — stainless steel can develop surface rust under sufficiently humid conditions without protection.
