Solvents & Lubricants
Proper lubrication and cleaning are the most important maintenance tasks for any firearm — a well-oiled, fouling-free action cycles reliably and lasts for decades; a neglected one fails at the worst possible moment. Impact Guns stocks a complete range of gun oils, CLP (cleaner-lubricant-protectant) products, solvents, bore cleaners, and cleaning kits from Otis Technology, Lucas Oil, Hoppe’s, Ballistol, and Break-Free — everything needed to keep every firearm in your collection running correctly.

Gun Oil vs. CLP: Which Do You Need?
Gun oil is a dedicated lubricant — applied to moving metal parts to reduce friction and prevent wear without cleaning or corrosion protection. CLP (cleaner-lubricant-protectant) is a three-in-one product that cleans carbon fouling, lubricates moving parts, and protects against rust in a single application. For routine maintenance where the firearm isn’t heavily fouled: CLP is the most efficient choice. For deep cleaning after high round counts or extended storage: dedicated solvent first, then oil. Break-Free CLP is the most widely issued military firearm lubricant and the most proven CLP product available. Otis Precision Gun Oil is the choice for precision application with the needle tip applicator. Lucas Oil Extreme Duty is the heaviest-duty lubricant for high-round-count semi-autos that run hot.
Bore Cleaning: Solvent Selection by Firearm
Bore cleaning removes copper jacketing fouling, lead fouling, and carbon deposits that accumulate in the barrel after firing. Hoppe’s No. 9 is the most recognized bore solvent in American shooting — effective on carbon fouling in rifle and handgun bores after normal shooting. For heavy copper fouling after high-volume centerfire rifle use, dedicated copper solvents produce faster results than Hoppe’s alone. For lead-fouled revolver and lead-bullet pistol bores, lead-specific solvents dissolve fouling that carbon cleaners don’t address. Ballistol is the traditional European multi-purpose solvent and lubricant that serves as a one-product solution for shooters who prefer simplicity over specialized products.
AR-15 and Semi-Auto Specific Lubrication
Semi-automatic firearms require more attention to lubrication than revolvers and bolt actions — the cycling action generates more friction, runs hotter under sustained fire, and accumulates carbon fouling faster. The AR-15’s direct impingement gas system deposits carbon directly into the bolt carrier group with every shot, requiring more frequent cleaning and lubrication than piston-operated alternatives. For AR-15 maintenance: clean the bolt carrier group after every range session, apply a light coat of CLP to the bolt carrier and cam pin, and lubricate the buffer and action spring. Heavy lubrication of the AR-15 is generally preferable to under-lubrication — a wet AR runs more reliably than a dry one under sustained fire.
Rust Prevention and Long-Term Storage
Firearms stored for extended periods require corrosion protection beyond standard CLP applications. Metal blued surfaces are particularly vulnerable to rust from humidity, fingerprint oils, and moisture. A light coat of gun oil on all metal surfaces before storage, combined with desiccant packets in the storage container, prevents rust formation during extended storage. For firearms stored in safes in humid climates, a dedicated rust prevention product or vapor corrosion inhibitor provides additional protection. Stainless steel firearms are more corrosion-resistant but not immune — stainless steel can develop surface rust under sufficiently humid conditions without protection.
Top Brands at Impact Guns
Otis Technology produces the most comprehensive cleaning kit systems — the Memory-Flex cleaning rods, precision applicator needle tips, and complete breech-to-muzzle cleaning kits used by military units worldwide. Lucas Oil’s Extreme Duty Gun Oil is the heaviest-duty lubricant for high-heat applications. Hoppe’s No. 9 is the American standard bore solvent with a 100-year track record. Break-Free CLP is the US military-issued three-in-one solution. Ballistol is the European traditional multi-purpose product. For complete cleaning kits, solvent, oil, patches, and brushes in a single package: the Otis cleaning kit system is the most comprehensive available at any price point.
