Smith & Wesson Model 19

The Smith & Wesson Model 19 is one of the most important revolvers ever produced—a medium-frame .357 Magnum that served as the standard law enforcement sidearm for departments across America for decades. Developed as a “Combat Magnum” that could handle full-power .357 loads in a K-frame lighter than the heavy N-frame, the Model 19 defined the service revolver category from the 1950s through the 1980s and has been reintroduced in updated form with modern improvements while retaining its classic lines.

Historical Significance

The Model 19 was the standard-issue sidearm for more American law enforcement officers than any other revolver, defining the service revolver category from the 1950s through the 1980s. FBI agents, state troopers, and municipal officers carried the Model 19 for its balance of power, accuracy, and manageable size. That service history created a proven track record across millions of rounds and decades of real-world use that few firearms can match. The Model 19’s reputation for accuracy and smooth action comes from sustained refinement aimed at exactly these demanding applications.

Current Production

S&W reintroduced the Model 19 in updated form with modern improvements while retaining the K-frame dimensions and classic lines of the original. Current production Model 19s feature improved internal components, enhanced sight options, and finish choices not available on original production guns. The Classic and Carry Comp variants offer different barrel lengths and configurations for different uses. All current production Model 19s share the fundamental platform and trigger quality that made the original so successful across decades of service.

K-Frame Characteristics

The Model 19’s K-frame is S&W’s medium-frame size—larger than the J-frame used in snub-nose carry revolvers, smaller than the N-frame used in the Model 29. The K-frame holds 6 rounds of .357 Magnum with good balance and a grip that fits most hands well. At approximately 36 ounces with a 4-inch barrel, the Model 19 is heavy enough to manage .357 Magnum recoil effectively without being unwieldy. For a service revolver or home defense revolver, the K-frame offers the best balance of power and handling in the S&W lineup.

Trigger Quality

The Model 19’s double-action trigger is among the finest production revolver triggers available. S&W’s precision manufacturing and decades of refinement produce a smooth, consistent double-action pull that most shooters find significantly better than budget revolver alternatives. The single-action pull for precise shots is equally excellent. For revolver shooters who use double-action as their primary technique—as trained law enforcement shooters do—the Model 19’s trigger quality is a genuine and immediately perceptible advantage.
