Sig Sauer P225
The Sig Sauer P225 is a single-stack 9mm pistol in Sig’s legendary P-Series family, originally developed in the 1970s for West German police forces and reintroduced as the P225-A1 with modern enhancements. Slim, accurate, and carrying the double-action/single-action heritage of the P226 and P229, the P225-A1 is the choice for shooters who want a thinner, more carry-friendly Sig without sacrificing the DA/SA trigger system that defines the P-Series character.

P225-A1 vs. Original P225: What Did Sig Update?
The original P225 was produced from 1978 through the 1990s and was issued widely to European police agencies. The P225-A1, reintroduced around 2016, brought the design current with a short-reset trigger, enhanced ergonomics, and Sig’s E2 grip module for a slimmer feel. The P225-A1 retains the original’s 8+1 capacity and single-stack 9mm architecture but adds the updated alloy frame texturing, updated sight cuts, and the SRT (Short Reset Trigger) that reduces the reset distance compared to the original. Original P225s are collectible and shoot well but lack the SRT and modern sight cuts. For a new buyer, the P225-A1 is the right choice.
How Does the P225 Compare to the P239?
The P225 and P239 are both single-stack Sig 9mm carry pistols with DA/SA triggers, but the P239 is slightly larger in overall dimensions and was specifically designed for the US concealed carry market. The P225-A1 is slightly slimmer and has a more European feel—its grip is shorter and the overall package is marginally more compact. The P239 was discontinued in 2018 and is now found primarily on the secondary market; the P225-A1 is the current production single-stack P-Series option. For a new buyer choosing between them, the P225-A1 is the practical choice for availability and warranty support.
P225 vs. P365: Single-Stack Old School vs. Modern Micro-Compact
The P365 has largely replaced the single-stack 9mm category in the modern market—it offers 10+1 capacity in a package nearly as slim as the P225-A1’s 8+1. The P365 uses a striker-fired trigger; the P225-A1 uses Sig’s DA/SA system. For a shooter who specifically wants the DA/SA manual of arms, hammer-fired reliability, and classic P-Series feel, the P225-A1 is irreplaceable. For a shooter whose primary goal is maximum concealed carry capability, the P365’s higher capacity in a similar size makes a compelling case. The two guns represent different philosophies—classic European design vs. modern American carry optimization.
Carrying the P225-A1: Holster and Practical Considerations
The P225-A1’s single-stack frame makes it one of the slimmest P-Series Sigs available, IWB-carry friendly in a way the double-stack P226 and P229 are not. At 30.5 oz unloaded it is heavier than polymer-framed alternatives, but the all-metal construction provides heft that many shooters prefer for felt recoil management and carry presence. Holster support is good—most P229-compatible holsters require P225-specific variants, and makers including Galco, Safariland, and Alien Gear produce P225-A1 options. The DA first pull is the primary carry consideration; shooters who train extensively with the P225-A1’s 10-lb DA pull shoot it accurately and trust it completely.
P225-A1 Accuracy and Range Performance
Like all P-Series Sigs, the P225-A1 is a highly accurate pistol. The fixed barrel design (no tilting barrel as in a Browning-pattern action) provides exceptional shot-to-shot consistency—the barrel returns to the same position after every shot. Most P225-A1 pistols produce groups under 2″ at 25 yards from a rest with quality 9mm ammunition. The single-action pull after the first DA shot breaks cleanly at around 4.4 lbs, which is conducive to accurate rapid fire. For a carry gun that doubles as a range gun where precision matters, the P225-A1 punches well above its compact size.
