Pietta Revolvers
F.lli Pietta is one of the two great Italian makers of historical revolver reproductions — alongside Uberti — producing faithful replicas of the Colt 1851 Navy, 1860 Army, Remington 1858, Single Action Army, and other 19th-century revolvers for shooters, cowboy action competitors, reenactors, and collectors. Impact Guns carries Pietta black powder and cartridge revolvers.

Pietta vs. Uberti: The Italian Replica Choice
Pietta and Uberti are the two dominant Italian makers of Old West revolver reproductions. Both produce high-quality guns; the differences are subtle. Pietta historically holds the price advantage and offers a broader range of black powder cap-and-ball models. Uberti is often considered slightly more polished in finish and detail work, with stronger emphasis on cartridge SAA-style guns. For black powder revolvers, Pietta is the value leader; for cartridge cowboy guns, both are excellent and shoppers often choose by specific model availability and price.
Black Powder Cap-and-Ball Revolvers
Pietta’s cap-and-ball lineup reproduces the major Civil War-era designs: the Colt 1851 Navy in .36 caliber, the Colt 1860 Army in .44, the Remington 1858 New Model Army, and the Walker, Dragoon, and Pocket models. These ship as black powder firearms under federal law — no FFL required for direct shipping in most states — and use loose powder, cap-and-ball loading, percussion-cap ignition. They’re the practical entry into authentic 19th-century shooting.
Single Action Army Reproductions
Pietta produces cartridge-firing Single Action Army revolvers in .45 Colt, .357 Magnum, .44-40, and other historical chamberings — the same pattern as Colt’s original 1873 design. These ship as standard firearms requiring FFL transfer. They’re the standard equipment for cowboy action shooters competing in the SASS-sanctioned categories where SAA-style guns are required.
Cowboy Action Shooting
Pietta SAA revolvers in .38 Special and .357 Magnum are popular cowboy action picks — lower recoil than .45 Colt for fast double-tap stages, with a wider ammunition selection. Many cowboy shooters run a pair of matched Piettas in their preferred caliber. The lever-action rifles, double-barrel shotguns, and side-by-side shotguns common in cowboy action complete the period equipment. See our cowboy action shooting page for the discipline overview.
Loading and Shooting Black Powder Revolvers
Cap-and-ball revolvers require attention to loading procedure: measured black powder or substitute (Pyrodex, Triple Seven) into each chamber, lubricated lead ball seated firmly, lubricated wad over the ball, percussion cap on the nipple. Cleaning is mandatory after every shooting session — black powder residue is corrosive and will rust a revolver internally within days if neglected. Modern non-corrosive substitutes (Pyrodex, Triple Seven, Pyrodex P) reduce but don’t eliminate the cleaning requirement.
Frequently Asked Questions
Do Pietta black powder revolvers require an FFL?
Most don’t — cap-and-ball revolvers are classified as antique firearms under federal law and ship directly to your door without an FFL transfer in most states. Some states (including New York, New Jersey, and others) regulate them as firearms and require FFL transfer. Check your state’s laws before ordering. Cartridge-firing Pietta SAAs always require FFL transfer.
Is Pietta or Uberti better?
Both produce excellent replica revolvers. Pietta tends to be slightly more affordable; Uberti is sometimes considered to have finer detail finishing. Both companies make guns good enough for cowboy action competition, reenactment, and collecting. Specific model availability and price often drive the choice between them.
What caliber Pietta SAA for cowboy action?
.38 Special / .357 Magnum is the most popular choice — lower recoil than .45 Colt, faster follow-up shots, and cheaper practice ammunition. .45 Colt remains popular for shooters who prefer the historical caliber and don’t mind the recoil. .44-40 is the most authentic for late-1800s configurations but commands premium pricing.
