PDW Rifles
Personal defense weapons (PDWs) are compact, lightweight firearms designed for maximum portability and close-range effectiveness. The PDW category spans pistol-caliber carbines with folding or collapsing stocks, short-barreled rifles, and purpose-built compact platforms chambered in 9mm, .300 Blackout, 5.7x28mm, and other calibers optimized for suppressed use or close-quarters applications. Impact Guns carries PDW-style firearms from B&T, IWI, Maxim Defense, Springfield Armory, and others.

What Defines a PDW?
The PDW concept originated with military and law enforcement agencies who needed a firearm more capable than a pistol but more compact than a full-size rifle — something that could be carried by support personnel, vehicle crews, or plainclothes officers. Modern civilian PDWs typically feature: barrel lengths under 12″ (often requiring NFA SBR registration unless configured as a pistol), folding or collapsing stocks for minimal carry length, and either pistol-caliber or intermediate rifle calibers. The Springfield Hellion, IWI Tavor X95, and B&T GHM9 are current market examples.
PDW Stocks and Adapters
PDW-style buffer tube adapters and folding stock mechanisms have become popular AR-15 accessories, allowing standard AR lowers to accept PDW-profile stocks from companies like KAK Industry, Maxim Defense, and SB Tactical. These convert a standard AR pistol build into a more PDW-appropriate platform. The Maxim Defense CQB stock is the most recognized PDW-style brace/stock in the AR ecosystem, providing an extremely compact overall length while maintaining a functional cheek weld.
Caliber Considerations
9mm PDWs use standard pistol ammunition, are typically suppressor-friendly with 147gr subsonic loads, and benefit from large aftermarket magazine options. .300 Blackout PDW builds offer rifle-caliber terminal performance in a compact package and are purpose-built for suppressed subsonic use. 5.7x28mm PDWs (FN PS90, Ruger 57) offer high-velocity, armor-piercing-capable performance in a rifle-length cartridge from a compact platform. Each caliber involves different trade-offs in terminal performance, magazine capacity, and suppressor compatibility.
NFA Considerations
PDW-style firearms with stocks and barrels under 16″ are regulated as short-barrel rifles (SBRs) under the NFA, requiring a tax stamp and registration. Pistol-configuration PDWs with arm braces or no stock avoid NFA classification. The line between pistol and SBR has been subject to regulatory interpretation — always verify current ATF guidance before building or purchasing a PDW-style firearm with a barrel under 16″.
