The Firearms That Won the West

Two firearms defined the American frontier more than any others: the single-action revolver and the lever-action rifle. The Colt Single Action Army (introduced 1873) and Winchester Model 1873 rifle became the defining tools of the American West — and their modern reproductions remain some of the most satisfying firearms to shoot and own today.

Single-Action Revolvers

Single-action revolvers require the hammer to be manually cocked before each shot. The deliberate, rhythmic action is part of the experience. Uberti makes the finest SAA reproductions available — their 1873 Cattleman series is built to exacting specifications in Italy and represents the closest you can get to an original Colt SAA without museum prices. Cimarron Arms also produces exceptional cowboy revolvers with period-correct features for SASS (Single Action Shooting Society) competition and collectors.

Lever-Action Rifles

Henry Repeating Arms makes the finest lever-action rifles available today — period. Made in America, with walnut stocks, brass or blued receivers, and a smooth action that puts most imports to shame. Their Protector Carbine series in .357 Magnum, .45-70, and 30-30 pairs perfectly with a single-action revolver for a complete cowboy-era setup. Available in multiple calibers including pistol calibers that share ammunition with compatible revolvers.

Cowboy Action Shooting (SASS)

If you’re interested in SASS competition, the basic equipment requirement is two single-action revolvers, a lever-action or pump-action rifle, and a period-appropriate shotgun. Caliber matching between your revolver and rifle (e.g., both in .357 Magnum/.38 Special or both in .45 Long Colt) simplifies your ammunition supply significantly.
