Maxim Defense
Maxim Defense is a Gilbert, Arizona manufacturer producing some of the most purpose-engineered short-barrel firearms and suppressors available — purpose-built for the shooter who wants the absolute shortest, most capable platform possible. The MD9 and MD19 pistol-caliber carbines use Maxim’s patented SCW (Super Compact Weapon) stock system to achieve overall lengths under 20 inches with a full-power suppressor attached, and their DSX suppressor line is designed from the ground up as an integrated system rather than an afterthought. Impact Guns stocks 59 Maxim Defense products including pistols, suppressors, and 8.6 Blackout ammunition.

Maxim Defense MD9 and MD19: The PDW Pistol Platform
The MD9 (9mm) and MD19 (.300 Blackout and 5.56) are Maxim’s PDW-style AR pistols, built around their patented SCW buffer system that collapses the stock into the pistol grip area — eliminating the conventional buffer tube and producing a dramatically shorter overall package. The MD9 in 9mm with a 5.5″ barrel runs as short as 14″ overall with the brace collapsed, making it one of the most compact 9mm PCCs available while maintaining AR-platform ergonomics and a blowback operating system tuned for suppressed use. The MD19 brings 5.56 and .300 Blackout performance to the same ultra-compact platform.
Maxim DSX Suppressor: Designed as a System
Most suppressors are designed to be universal — compatible with many hosts. Maxim’s DSX suppressors are designed specifically for their MD-series pistols, optimizing the gas flow, balance, and overall length for the platform they attach to. The DSX HD (.45 caliber) and standard DSX are rated for pistol and intermediate rifle calibers. Since January 1, 2026, the NFA $200 tax stamp has been eliminated, making the Maxim suppressor ecosystem significantly more accessible. The Ruger MK IV-SD integrally suppressed pistol in their lineup represents another direction — a factory-integral .22 LR suppressor that needs no additional NFA item.
Maxim SCW Stock System: What Makes It Different
The Maxim SCW (Super Compact Weapon) stock/brace system is the core innovation behind the MD-series platform. Conventional AR pistols use a standard buffer tube extending rearward from the lower receiver — a design that limits how compact the overall package can be. The SCW system folds the buffer spring into the grip module itself, allowing the stock to collapse to virtually zero length behind the receiver. This gives Maxim PDWs their distinctive ultra-compact profile and makes them genuinely pocket-able with certain configurations. The SCW system is also available as an aftermarket component for compatible Mil-spec AR lowers.
Maxim Defense and 8.6 Blackout: The SBA Ammo Connection
Maxim Defense produces Short Barrel Ammunition (SBA) in 8.6 Blackout — a solid copper, match-grade load designed specifically for the short barrels (8–12″) that define the 8.6 Blackout platform. Standard 8.6 Blackout loads are optimized for longer barrels; Maxim’s SBA is engineered to deliver reliable terminal performance and consistent velocities from the compact barrels their guns use. If you’re running an 8.6 Blackout build with a short barrel, Maxim SBA is the purpose-built ammunition choice. See our 8.6 Blackout ammo page for the full selection.
Maxim Defense vs. Q LLC: Comparing Ultra-Compact Suppressed Platforms
Maxim Defense and Q LLC occupy similar territory — both produce ultra-compact, suppressor-optimized AR-based platforms with integrated design philosophies. Q focuses on the 8.6 Blackout caliber with the Boombox and produces lightweight titanium suppressors designed for their specific hosts. Maxim focuses on 9mm PCC and 5.56/.300 Blackout with the SCW stock innovation as the defining feature. The choice comes down to caliber preference and platform: Q for dedicated 8.6 Blackout, Maxim for the shortest possible 9mm or intermediate-caliber suppressed build.
