H&R DOE Pistol
The H&R Retro DOE Pistol is Harrington & Richardson’s recreation of the Department of Energy submachine gun configuration that protected nuclear facilities and federal agents throughout the 1980s. Chambered in 9mm with a 7.5-inch chrome moly vanadium barrel, slick-side carry handle upper, DOE-pattern triangular handguard with heat shields, and the H&R HAR-15 adjustable pistol brace, the DOE Pistol captures one of the most historically compelling AR-platform configurations ever fielded — now in a legal civilian pistol format.

What Was the Original DOE SMG?
In the late 1970s and 1980s, the U.S. Department of Energy needed a compact submachine gun for nuclear facility security personnel — agents who required a weapon more powerful than a handgun but more maneuverable than a standard rifle. The solution was an AR-platform 9mm submachine gun built on a shortened receiver with a carry handle upper and period-correct triangular handguard, issued to DOE security teams at nuclear sites across the country. These weapons were rarely photographed and almost never seen publicly, giving them a near-mythological status among AR-15 collectors. The H&R DOE Pistol brings that configuration to civilian ownership for the first time in production form.

9mm in an AR Platform: Why It Works
The DOE Pistol’s 9mm chambering uses direct blowback operation — mechanically simpler than the AR-15’s gas-operated system and well-suited to pistol calibers. The 7.5-inch barrel extracts strong performance from 9mm ammunition, producing higher muzzle velocity than a standard pistol barrel while keeping the overall package compact with the brace folded. Colt-style 9mm magazines are widely available and hold 20–32 rounds depending on the magazine selected. For suppressor use, the 5/8×24 threaded barrel accepts most 9mm pistol cans directly. DOE Pistol vs Standard AR Pistol: What Makes It Different
The DOE Pistol is a retro-configuration AR pistol, not a standard modern AR pistol. Where modern AR pistols feature M-LOK or KeyMod handguards, low-profile gas blocks, and adjustable stocks, the DOE Pistol uses period-correct triangular handguards, a carry handle upper, and the HAR-15 brace that matches the original DOE SMG profile. The slick-side upper (no forward assist) is correct to the original configuration. For buyers who want a modern AR pistol with maximum rail space and accessories, look at our AR-15 pistol options. For buyers who want a historically accurate recreation of a genuinely rare federal agency configuration, the DOE Pistol is in a category of its own.
Upper Assembly Option
The H&R DOE is also available as an upper assembly only, allowing owners of AR-15 lower receivers to add the DOE configuration without purchasing a complete pistol. The upper assembly includes the barrel, upper receiver, handguard, and carry handle. Note that installing the DOE upper on a rifle-registered lower creates a rifle; it must be installed on a pistol-registered lower to maintain pistol legal status. Consult current ATF guidelines for your specific configuration.
