Holosun 509T
The Holosun 509T is an enclosed emitter red dot sight designed for duty pistols, competition shooting, and any application where a fully protected optic matters. Unlike open-emitter designs, the 509T’s titanium housing completely encloses the LED emitter, eliminating debris fouling and maintaining zero in the harshest conditions. It runs on the same footprint as the 407T and 507T, features Holosun’s Solar Failsafe technology, and ships with a 32 MOA circle, 2 MOA dot, or both via Multi-Reticle System.

What Makes the 509T Different From Other Holosun Optics?
The 509T sits at the top of Holosun’s pistol optic lineup because of its enclosed emitter design. Open-emitter sights like the 507C and 507K expose the LED to the elements, which can cause fouling in dusty or wet environments. The 509T wraps the emitter in a titanium shroud that protects it completely. That titanium housing also makes the 509T significantly more durable than aluminum-bodied optics, at the cost of slightly more weight. For duty carry or hard-use competition, that trade-off is widely considered worth it.
Solar Failsafe and Battery Life
The 509T uses Holosun’s Solar Failsafe system, which pairs a small solar cell with the primary CR2032 battery. In bright light, the solar cell powers the optic independently, preserving battery life. In low light or indoors, it draws from the battery. Holosun rates battery life at up to 50,000 hours on the lowest brightness setting. The multi-reticle system lets you toggle between the 2 MOA dot alone, the 32 MOA circle alone, or both together — without breaking your shooting position.
509T vs. 507T: Which Should You Choose?
The 507T and 509T share the same footprint and mounting pattern, but the 509T’s fully enclosed emitter is the defining difference. The 507T uses an open-emitter design and aluminum housing, making it lighter and less expensive. The 509T costs more and weighs more, but the titanium housing and enclosed emitter make it the correct choice for law enforcement, military, or any shooter who needs an optic that functions after a significant impact or extended exposure to grit. If budget is the primary concern and conditions are controlled, the 507T is a capable alternative.
Mounting Footprint and Pistol Compatibility
The 509T uses the Holosun 509 footprint, which is not universal. Most modern duty pistols — including the Glock MOS, Sig Sauer P320 RXP, Springfield Echelon, and others — require a specific adapter plate or come direct-mount ready for this footprint. Always confirm your pistol’s optic cut before ordering. The 509T ships with an optics wrench, battery, and lens cloth. It does not include mounting screws specific to all pistols; confirm screw torque specs for your platform before installing.
Competition and Duty Use Cases
The 509T is legal in USPSA Carry Optics division, IDPA CO division, and is approved by numerous law enforcement agencies as a duty optic. Its enclosed emitter design specifically addresses the reliability objections that kept some agencies from approving open-emitter optics. For competitive shooters, the multi-reticle system provides flexibility: the circle-dot combination is fast to acquire at close range while the dot alone is more precise at distance. The titanium housing survives the draw-stroke impacts and reholstering abuse that rack up over a season of competition.
