What Is the Heritage Barkeep?
The Barkeep is Heritage Manufacturing's take on the classic "growing gun" — a compact single-action revolver designed to be concealable and handy. The bird's head grip frame (no squared grip base) and shortened barrel make the Barkeep more compact than the standard Rough Rider, with a distinctly Old West aesthetic inspired by the small revolvers that barkeepers and gamblers carried in the frontier era. It's available in .22 LR and .22 WMR with a 2" or 3" barrel — compact enough for pocket carry (where legally permitted) and fun to shoot at the range.
Key Features
Bird's head grip frame — The Barkeep's defining visual feature. The bird's head grip has no squared base — it curves smoothly forward, giving the revolver a more compact profile and a distinctive appearance. The grip shape is historically accurate to the small pocket revolvers of the 1860s-1880s era.
2" or 3" barrel — The short barrel options keep the Barkeep genuinely compact. The 2" is the most compact and most visually distinctive; the 3" adds slightly better sight radius and velocity.
Single-action mechanism — Same manual of arms as the Rough Rider — hammer must be cocked manually before each shot. Six-round cylinder in .22 LR.
Variety of grip materials — Available with wood grips, simulated pearl grips, and other decorative options depending on configuration. The grip material significantly affects the overall appearance and feel.
Barkeep vs. Rough Rider
The Rough Rider is Heritage's standard model — a full-size SAA-style single-action in a range of barrel lengths. The Barkeep is the compact, stylized variant — shorter barrel, bird's head grip, and a more historically specific aesthetic. The Rough Rider is the better choice for general shooting, plinking, and youth use. The Barkeep is the choice for collectors, Old West enthusiasts, and shooters who specifically want the compact bird's head grip format.
Caliber Options
The Barkeep is available in .22 LR (6-round cylinder) and as a combination model with both a .22 LR and .22 WMR cylinder — allowing caliber swapping for .22 Magnum use. The combination model offers the most versatility.
