Ballistics Overview
Standard 9mm loads run 115–147 grains at 1,050–1,300 fps depending on bullet weight and barrel length. Lighter 115-grain loads run faster with a sharper recoil impulse; heavier 147-grain loads run slower and subsonic from most barrels, making them popular for suppressor use. The 124-grain load is the most common middle ground, balancing velocity and recoil for carry and range use. +P loads in 115 or 124 grain push velocity higher and are the standard recommendation for defensive use from compact pistols with short barrels.
FMJ Practice Loads
For range use, FMJ loads from Federal, Winchester, Remington, CCI Blazer, and Magtech offer reliable performance at accessible prices. Steel-case 9mm from Tula and Wolf is available at lower per-round cost and is fine for high-volume practice. Brass-case FMJ is worth the premium if you reload or if your semi-auto has had cycling issues with steel case. Buy in bulk—1,000 rounds at a time—to minimize per-round cost and ensure you always have practice ammo on hand.
Defensive Hollow Points
Federal HST in 124gr +P and 147gr standard pressure are among the most widely recommended defensive 9mm loads. Speer Gold Dot in 124gr and 147gr, Hornady Critical Duty 135gr +P, and Hornady Critical Defense 115gr are all proven performers with extensive published test data. Run a minimum of 50–100 rounds of your chosen defensive load to confirm function before relying on it for carry. Most quality loads will function flawlessly; the verification step eliminates uncertainty.
Subsonic and Suppressor Loads
The 147-grain 9mm load is naturally subsonic from most pistol barrels—the standard choice for suppressor use. Federal HST 147gr and Speer Gold Dot 147gr both serve as suppressor-friendly and quality defensive loads in a single product. If you specifically want the quietest possible result, confirm velocity data for your specific barrel length. Most quality 147-grain loads will be subsonic from standard 4–5 inch barrels; compact pistol barrels may push some 147gr loads slightly supersonic.
Pricing and Availability
9mm is the most competitively priced centerfire pistol caliber. FMJ typically runs $0.20–$0.40 per round depending on brand and quantity; steel case can drop below $0.20 per round on sale. Quality defensive hollow points run $0.60–$1.00 per round. Availability is generally excellent year-round, though demand spikes during political events can develop quickly. Buying a few hundred rounds of defensive ammo ahead of need is advisable as a hedge against supply disruption.
