GSG-16
The GSG-16 is a .22 LR semi-automatic carbine styled after the AR-15 platform — produced by German Sport Guns and imported by American Tactical, the GSG-16 delivers the AR-15’s manual of arms, ergonomics, and appearance in a rimfire package at a fraction of the centerfire cost per round. With a 16.25” barrel, collapsible stock, standard AR-15 pistol grip, and an eye-catching faux suppressor muzzle device, the GSG-16 is the most AR-accurate .22 LR training analog and the most fun-to-shoot rimfire carbine in its class.

AR-15 Training: The GSG-16 Advantage
The GSG-16’s primary application is AR-15 training at rimfire cost. The collapsible stock, pistol grip, safety selector, and charging handle position replicate the AR-15’s ergonomics closely enough that trigger time on the GSG-16 transfers directly to centerfire AR use. At .22 LR pricing — typically $0.05–0.10 per round vs. $0.30–0.50 per round for 5.56 NATO — the GSG-16 enables 3–6x more trigger repetitions for the same budget. For new AR owners building fundamentals, competitive shooters who want high-volume practice without centerfire cost, and anyone who simply wants to shoot more for less: the GSG-16 is the most practical rimfire training tool available.
Configuration Options: Black, FDE, and Smoke Metal
The GSG-16 is available in classic black, Flat Dark Earth (FDE), and a distinctive smoke metal finish that gives the platform an unusual matte gray appearance. All configurations use the same 16.25” barrel, collapsible stock, and faux suppressor muzzle device. The FDE configuration is the most popular for buyers who want a non-standard appearance; the smoke metal finish is the most distinctive and the least common in the field. All configurations accept standard .22 LR ammunition and the GSG-16’s proprietary 22-round magazines. The CA-compliant 10-round configuration is also stocked for California buyers.
The Faux Suppressor: Appearance and Function
The GSG-16’s most visually distinctive feature is its muzzle-mounted faux suppressor — a non-functional cosmetic tube that replicates the appearance of a suppressed carbine without the NFA classification or additional cost of an actual suppressor. The faux suppressor is purely cosmetic: it does not reduce sound, it does not require any registration, and it can be removed if desired. For buyers who want the aesthetics of a suppressed carbine for range use and photography without the suppressor investment, the GSG-16’s factory faux suppressor delivers the look. Note: if actual hearing-safe suppressed shooting is the goal, a dedicated suppressor host with a threaded barrel is the correct choice.
GSG-16 vs. M&P 15-22 and Ruger 10/22: Choosing Your .22 LR Trainer
The GSG-16 competes with the Smith & Wesson M&P 15-22 and the Ruger 10/22 as the primary .22 LR carbine options. The M&P 15-22 is the most AR-accurate of the three — it uses actual AR-15 controls including a bolt catch that locks back on empty. The Ruger 10/22 has the largest aftermarket of any .22 LR rifle and decades of documented reliability. The GSG-16 occupies a mid-point: more AR-accurate than the 10/22, typically more affordable than the M&P 15-22, and with the distinctive faux suppressor aesthetic that neither competitor offers. For training-first buyers who want maximum AR fidelity: M&P 15-22. For aftermarket depth and reliability: 10/22. For value and aesthetics: GSG-16.
