AR-15 Drum Magazines: 50-Round vs. 100-Round

The two most common AR-15 drum capacities are 50 and 100 rounds. The 50-round drum is the more practical choice for most applications — it adds meaningful capacity without the bulk and weight of the 100-round option and is more reliable across a wider range of AR-15 configurations. The KCI 50-round drum and X Products X-25 are the most reliable 50-round AR drums on the market. The 100-round drum (KCI 100-round, Beta C-Mag) provides maximum capacity but adds significant weight and bulk — best suited for range use or specific competition formats where reloading disruption matters. All AR-15 drums feed standard 5.56 NATO and .223 Remington from a standard STANAG lower receiver with no modification required.

AK-47 Drum Magazines: The 75-Round Standard

AK-47 pattern drums use a different feed geometry than AR-15 drums and are not interchangeable. The standard AK drum capacity is 75 rounds of 7.62x39mm, fitting all standard AK-47 and AKM-pattern receivers including WASR-10, VSKA, and Zastava M70 variants. KCI produces the most widely available AK-47 drum in the US market at an accessible price point. AK drums are generally considered more reliable than AR-15 drums due to the AK's more generous feed ramp geometry. For AK-74 pattern rifles in 5.45x39mm, separate drums are required — verify the caliber and pattern before purchasing.

Glock 9mm Drum Magazines: PCCs and Pistols

50-round Glock-pattern 9mm drums have become popular for pistol caliber carbines that accept Glock magazines — the Ruger PC Carbine, CMMG Banshee, and Kel-Tec Sub-2000 among others. The KCI Glock 9mm drum holds 50 rounds and fits all Glock 17/19-pattern magazine wells. These are popular for range use with PCCs where extended capacity reduces reloads during long strings of fire. Verify compatibility with your specific firearm before purchase — some PCC designs have magazine well clearance limitations that can affect drum fit even when the base pattern is compatible.

Ruger 10/22 Drum Magazines

The Ruger 10/22 has one of the most extensive drum magazine aftermarkets of any rimfire platform. ProMag and other manufacturers produce 25-round to 50-round drums in .22 LR for the 10/22 BX-25 footprint. These are popular for plinking and rimfire competition where extended capacity reduces reloads during long strings of fire. Reliability with .22 LR drums varies more than with centerfire drums — rimfire cartridges are more sensitive to feed geometry, and quality control between brands is meaningful. ProMag's 10/22 drum has the most established track record for reliability in this category.

Shotgun Drum Magazines

Drum magazines are available for several semi-automatic shotgun platforms. The Saiga-12 and Vepr-12 have the most developed drum aftermarket — 10 and 20-round drums in 12 gauge are available from manufacturers including MD Arms. AR-style shotguns from Derya and Panzer Arms that use detachable box magazines also have drum options available. Shotgun drums are mechanically more complex than rifle or pistol drums due to the length of 12 gauge shells; they require careful loading and consistent maintenance to function reliably. For shooters running a Saiga-12 or similar platform in 3-Gun competition, a quality drum significantly reduces stage time by eliminating reloads on shotgun-heavy arrays.

Drum Magazine Brand Comparison

Brand quality varies significantly in the drum magazine market. X Products (X-25, X-15) sets the benchmark for AR-15 drum reliability — machined aluminum construction, consistent spring tension, and a lifetime warranty. They are the most expensive option but the most trusted for serious use. KCI is the value leader — polymer-bodied drums at accessible prices that function reliably for range use when properly maintained. Beta C-Mag is the original 100-round dual-drum design with decades of military use behind it — reliable but bulky and expensive. ProMag covers the rimfire and pistol drum market with acceptable reliability for range use. For defensive or duty applications, X Products is the only drum brand worth recommending. For range and competition use where cost matters more than ultimate reliability, KCI delivers solid value.

Drum Magazine Compatibility Guide

Before purchasing a drum magazine, confirm three things: the caliber, the magazine pattern, and your firearm's clearance. Caliber must match exactly — a 5.56 AR drum will not function with .300 Blackout or 6.5 Grendel without a different drum. Magazine pattern determines fit — Glock-pattern drums fit Glock-compatible magazine wells, AR-pattern drums fit STANAG-compatible lowers. Clearance matters for PCCs and non-standard lowers — some drum bodies are wider than the magazine well opening allows, preventing insertion even when the base pattern is correct. Check manufacturer specifications against your firearm's magazine well dimensions if you're running a non-standard platform.

Drum Magazine Reliability and Maintenance

Drum magazines are mechanically more complex than box magazines and require more attention to maintenance and loading technique. The spring tension that drives the drum must be properly wound during loading — most drums include a winding key or built-in winding mechanism. Over-winding or under-winding the spring causes feeding failures. Keep drums clean and lightly lubricated; debris in the drum body is the most common reliability issue. Load drums to their rated capacity — overfilling by even a few rounds increases spring tension to the point of causing malfunctions. For range use where reliability is less critical than capacity, drums are excellent. For defensive use, standard box magazines are more reliable and should be preferred. State Restrictions on High-Capacity Magazines

Several states restrict magazine capacity to 10 rounds or fewer, which affects drum magazine availability and legality. California, Colorado, Connecticut, Hawaii, Illinois, Maryland, Massachusetts, New Jersey, New York, Oregon, Rhode Island, Vermont, and Washington have capacity restrictions that prohibit most drum magazines. Always verify your state's current magazine capacity laws before purchasing. Impact Guns ships to all states where drum magazines are legal and complies with all applicable state and federal regulations.
