Diamondback SDR-A

The Diamondback SDR-A is the lightest configuration in the Diamondback SDR revolver family—an aluminum-frame .38 Special +P revolver that weighs just 15.6 oz unloaded, making it one of the lightest production revolvers available in any caliber. The SDR-A also introduces the first enclosed hammer in the SDR lineup, providing fully snag-free operation for pocket carry and draw from a holster under clothing. Paired with fiber-optic front and rear sights, a push-button cylinder release, and a glass-bead-blast matte finish, the SDR-A is purpose-built for the buyer who wants maximum concealability in a proven double-action revolver. Introduced May 2026.

SDR-A vs. Standard SDR: What the Aluminum Frame Changes

The standard Diamondback SDR uses a stainless steel frame, which provides excellent durability and corrosion resistance at approximately 20+ oz. The SDR-A replaces the steel frame with an aluminum alloy, shaving roughly 5 oz and bringing the unloaded weight to 15.6 oz. The tradeoff is felt recoil—less mass means more perceived recoil per shot with .38 Special +P loads. Most buyers who choose the SDR-A are optimizing for carry weight over extended shooting comfort, which is the correct trade-off for a dedicated pocket or deep-cover carry revolver. The stainless cylinder is retained on the SDR-A, ensuring reliable ignition and long-term durability where it matters most.

Enclosed Hammer: The Carry Advantage

The SDR-A’s fully enclosed hammer is a first for the SDR family and a meaningful practical improvement for concealed carry. An exposed hammer can catch on clothing during a draw stroke, creating dangerous delays when the firearm is needed most. The enclosed hammer eliminates this entirely—the SDR-A draws as cleanly from a pocket or inside-the-waistband holster as any striker-fired pistol. The enclosed design also prevents debris and lint from accumulating around the hammer mechanism during pocket carry. Double-action-only operation means a consistent, predictable trigger pull on every shot with no need to manually cock the hammer.

Fiber-Optic Sights and Push-Button Cylinder Release

The SDR-A ships with fiber-optic front and rear sights—an unusual feature for a lightweight carry revolver where most manufacturers use fixed steel sights. The fiber-optic elements gather ambient light and provide a bright, fast-to-acquire sight picture in daylight and low-light conditions. The push-button cylinder release is positioned on the frame rather than the traditional side-swing crane release, providing a different manual of arms that some shooters find more intuitive for speed reloading. Combined with the glass-bead-blast matte finish that eliminates glare in any lighting condition, the SDR-A is configured for practical carry use rather than range aesthetics.

.38 Special +P for Defense

The SDR-A is rated for .38 Special +P ammunition, which provides meaningfully more velocity and energy than standard-pressure .38 Special loads. Federal HST .38 Special +P, Hornady Critical Defense .38 Special +P, and Speer Gold Dot .38 Special +P are the benchmark defensive loads that achieve reliable expansion and FBI-standard penetration depths from short-barrel revolvers. Standard .38 Special is appropriate for practice. For carry, +P hollow point loads from one of the major manufacturers are the correct choice to maximize terminal performance from the SDR-A’s short barrel.
