What Is the CVA Scout?
The CVA Scout is a single-shot break-action pistol—think of it as a compact hunting handgun built on the same reliable break-action mechanism CVA uses in its muzzleloaders and Cascade rifles. It features a 14-inch barrel (legal as a handgun under NFA rules without additional paperwork), a synthetic stock, and a compact overall length that makes it easy to handle in a blind, from a saddle, or in dense brush. The action is exceptionally simple—open the action, load one round, close it, shoot. There is nothing to malfunction.
Caliber Options
The Scout’s caliber versatility is its biggest selling point. The .300 Blackout version is one of the most popular suppressor hosts available—the short barrel and subsonic capability make it exceptionally quiet when suppressed. The 350 Legend variant offers excellent deer-hunting performance within 200 yards with modest recoil. The .44 Magnum Scout bridges handgun and rifle performance for hunters who want a single-hand option. The .45-70 Government Scout is the most powerful in the lineup, suitable for large and dangerous game at close range. Barrels are interchangeable, so one Scout frame can serve multiple purposes.
The Scout as a Suppressor Host
The CVA Scout .300 Blackout has become arguably the most cost-effective suppressor host on the market. A threaded 14-inch barrel in .300 BLK running subsonic ammunition with a good suppressor produces hearing-safe report from a platform that costs a fraction of a suppressed AR-15 pistol. The break-action doesn’t bleed gas at the action the way semi-automatic designs do, which means more of the suppressor’s work goes toward reducing muzzle blast rather than cycling a bolt. For suppressor owners or those planning a suppressor purchase, the Scout .300 BLK deserves serious consideration.
Hunting Applications
Single-shot hunting handguns occupy a specific niche—they’re legal for handgun-only hunts, compact enough for tree stand use, and accurate at ranges that embarrass most pistols. The Scout’s fixed barrel design (no barrel movement during firing, unlike semi-autos) contributes to excellent inherent accuracy. A Picatinny rail is standard for scope or red dot mounting. Many Scout owners mount a quality 2–7x scope and use it as a dedicated deer or hog pistol. At Scout prices, it’s accessible to hunters who want the handgun-hunt experience without a large investment.
Takedown and Storage
The Scout breaks open for storage in under two seconds. In .300 Blackout configuration, the entire pistol with barrel removed fits in a small pack. This makes it a natural truck gun, a backpacking sidearm for bear or hog country, or a compact addition to a bug-out bag. The synthetic stock handles weather, and the simple action has no springs or small parts to fail in the field. For hunters and outdoorspeople who want capable firepower in the smallest possible package, the Scout checks every box.
