What Is Cowboy Action Shooting?

Cowboy Action Shooting (CAS) is a competitive shooting sport organized by the Single Action Shooting Society (SASS) in which participants dress in Old West costumes and engage steel targets using period-appropriate firearms. Stages are designed around Western themes and require fast, accurate shooting with multiple firearms. It’s one of the most family-friendly and welcoming shooting sports — beginners are actively encouraged.

The Basic SASS Equipment List

To compete in a SASS match you’ll need:

  • Two single-action revolvers — Uberti 1873 Cattleman or Cimarron Model P are the most popular choices. Must be single-action only.
  • One lever-action or pump-action rifle — Must be a pre-1899 design or replica. Henry and Uberti lever-actions are SASS staples.
  • One shotgun — Side-by-side, single-shot, or exposed-hammer pump. Stoeger Coach Gun is extremely popular for its reliability and price.
  • Period-appropriate costume — Hat, boots, and Western attire. Part of the fun.

Caliber Matching: The Key to Simplicity

The smartest approach for new SASS shooters is to match your revolver and rifle calibers so you only need one type of pistol-caliber ammunition. Popular combos: both in .357 Magnum/.38 Special (most common), both in .45 Long Colt (classic choice), or both in .44 Magnum/.44 Special. Running .38 Special practice loads in both your revolver and lever-action keeps ammunition costs low.
