Burris MTAC
The Burris MTAC (Mil-Tac) is Burris Optics’ purpose-built tactical low power variable optic, designed for AR-15 and patrol rifle applications where both close-quarters speed and medium-range precision are required. Available in 1-4x24 and 1-8x30 configurations, the MTAC has earned a strong reputation among law enforcement, military, and competition shooters who want a capable LPVO at a price well below the premium tier. It is fully compatible with standard 30mm rings and ships with an illuminated reticle that aids fast target acquisition in low light.
Note: The Burris MTAC has been discontinued by Burris Optics. If you're researching the MTAC, see our Burris Optics page for current LPVO options, or consider the Vortex Strike Eagle as a comparable alternative.

MTAC 1-4x vs. 1-8x: Which Configuration Is Right for You?
The MTAC 1-4x24 is Burris’s original LPVO configuration, covering the standard tactical range from true 1x CQB capability to 4x for precision at 200–300 yards. The 1-8x30 extends that upper range to 8x, adding meaningful precision for shots at 400–500 yards and making it more competitive in precision rifle competition. For law enforcement patrol rifles, home defense, and 3-Gun use where most engagements occur inside 200 yards, the 1-4x is lightweight and practical. For shooters who want more versatility at distance or compete in stages with longer steel, the 1-8x delivers a meaningful advantage. Both use the same illuminated reticle and 30mm tube.
MTAC Reticle: Ballistic AR Illuminated
The MTAC ships with Burris’s Ballistic AR (BAR) reticle—a circle-dot design with additional holdover and windage marks calibrated for 5.56 NATO at standard velocities. The illuminated red dot in the center functions like a red dot at 1x for fast CQB target acquisition, while the surrounding marks provide holdover references at higher magnification settings. The illumination uses a single CR2032 battery with multiple brightness settings including a very low NVG-compatible setting on select configurations. For most AR-15 patrol and defensive applications, the BAR reticle covers the common shooting scenarios without the complexity of a more detailed reticle.
MTAC for 3-Gun Competition
The Burris MTAC has a long history in 3-Gun competition as a value-tier LPVO that punches above its price point. Its true 1x capability at the low end, illuminated reticle for dark barn or indoor stages, and reliable tracking at the upper magnification range make it a practical competition choice. Competitors who have graduated past the Vortex Strike Eagle and want a step up without committing to premium pricing frequently land on the MTAC 1-8x as their next scope. The 30mm tube is compatible with all standard competition cantilever mounts from Aero Precision, LaRue, and Burris’s own PEPR mount.
Burris Lifetime Warranty
Like all Burris optics, the MTAC is covered by Burris’s Ironclad Warranty—a no-fault lifetime guarantee that covers repair or replacement regardless of how the damage occurred, including accidental damage. Burris performs repairs at their Greeley, Colorado facility with typical turnaround times of 2–4 weeks. This warranty provides meaningful protection for a scope that may be used in demanding conditions, including mounted on a hard-recoiling rifle or subjected to the rough handling of field use and competition.
