Pump Shotguns

Pump-action shotguns are the most proven and reliable shotgun design on the market — manually operated, nearly impossible to jam, and available in configurations for home defense, hunting, and tactical use. Why Choose a Pump Shotgun?

Pump shotguns offer three things no other shotgun action can match: near-absolute reliability, the ability to shoot any load regardless of pressure, and a lower price point than semi-automatics. The manual pump action cycles every time regardless of ammunition — light target loads, heavy magnums, slugs, and buckshot all feed reliably. For home defense, this reliability under stress is the primary reason law enforcement and military units have carried pump shotguns for over a century. The distinctive sound of a pump cycling is also one of the most recognized deterrent sounds in existence.

Key Models We Stock

Mossberg 500 — America's best-selling pump shotgun. Affordable, reliable, and available in more configurations than any other pump gun. The 500 is our top recommendation for first-time shotgun buyers. Available in 12, 20, and .410 gauge with barrel lengths from 18.5" to 28".

Mossberg 590 / 590A1 — The 500's heavy-duty sibling. Thicker barrel, metal trigger guard and safety, and a longer magazine tube. The 590A1 is the version that passed the US military's grueling MIL-SPEC 3443E torture test. Our top pick for home defense and serious use.

Remington 870 — The second most popular pump shotgun in history. Smooth action, excellent balance, and an enormous aftermarket. The 870 Express is the value pick; the 870 Wingmaster is the premium hunting version with a polished receiver.

Winchester SXP — The fastest pump shotgun made, using an inertia-assisted action that cycles faster than a traditional pump. Popular for clay target sports where speed matters.

Home Defense vs. Hunting Configurations

Home defense: 18.5" barrel for maximum maneuverability, 12 gauge, ghost ring or bead sights, extended magazine tube if available. The Mossberg 590A1 and Remington 870 Express Tactical are optimized for this use.

Hunting: 26–28" barrel for better pattern and swing-through, improved cylinder through full choke tubes, walnut or synthetic stock. The Remington 870 Wingmaster and Mossberg 500 Field are the classics here.

Dual purpose: Many pump shotguns ship with two barrels — an 18.5" for defense and a 26–28" for hunting. This gives you one gun for both roles at a lower combined cost than buying two separate firearms.

What to Know Before You Buy

  • Pump shotguns require you to manually rack the action between shots — practice your pump stroke so it becomes automatic under stress.
  • Most pump shotguns accept interchangeable choke tubes — a modified choke is the most versatile starting point for hunting.
  • 12 gauge produces significantly more recoil than 20 gauge. New shooters and smaller-framed buyers often shoot 20 gauge more accurately.
  • All shotguns ship to your local FFL dealer. Standard background check procedures apply.
