Finding the right holster for a 1911 requires more attention to fit than most modern pistols — 1911s come in three frame sizes (Government/full-size, Commander, Officers/compact), with and without accessory rails, and from dozens of manufacturers with slightly different external dimensions. A holster designed for a railed 5-inch 1911 won’t fit a non-railed Commander, and vice versa. 1911 Frame Sizes: Government, Commander, and Officers
Before buying a 1911 holster, know your frame size. Government (full-size) models have a 5-inch barrel and full-length grip — Colt Government, Springfield Loaded, Kimber Custom. Commander models have a 4.25-inch barrel with a full-length grip — Colt Commander, Kimber Pro Carry. Officers/Compact models have a 3–3.5-inch barrel with a shortened grip — Springfield EMP, Kimber Ultra Carry. Many holsters fit Government and Commander interchangeably (the grip length is the same), but Officers-size 1911s require a different holster due to the shorter grip.
Railed vs. Non-Railed 1911s
The second critical fitment question: does your 1911 have an accessory rail? Railed 1911s (Springfield TRP Operator, Kimber Warrior, most Staccato 2011s) have a wider dust cover that will not fit in holsters designed for non-railed 1911s. Always verify “railed” or “non-railed” compatibility when ordering a 1911 holster.
IWB (Inside the Waistband) 1911 Holsters
IWB holsters tuck the 1911 inside your pants against your body for concealed carry.
