Sierra Bullets

Sierra Bullets is a Sedalia, Missouri bullet manufacturer producing some of the most accurate and widely used projectiles in competitive shooting — most notably the MatchKing, the dominant bullet in long-range precision rifle competition and the choice of more national and world champions than any other bullet. Sierra also produces the GameKing for hunting, the BlitzKing for varmints, and the Tipped MatchKing (TMK) that brings MatchKing accuracy with improved terminal performance. Sierra bullets are components for handloaders — not loaded ammunition — and represent a significant upgrade path for precision rifle shooters who reload.

Sierra MatchKing: The Competition Standard

The Sierra MatchKing (SMK) is the most successful long-range competition bullet in history — used to set records at Camp Perry, Palma matches, F-Class, and PRS competitions worldwide. The MatchKing’s boat-tail hollow point design produces exceptional ballistic coefficients and the most consistent lot-to-lot quality of any production bullet. The 175gr .308 MatchKing (7.308) and 77gr .224 MatchKing are the most popular loads in their respective calibers for precision rifle competition. Note that the MatchKing is a competition target bullet — its hollow point is designed for aerodynamic consistency, not expansion, and it is not optimized for hunting use.

Sierra GameKing: Hunting Bullets

The Sierra GameKing uses the same boat-tail design as the MatchKing for flat trajectory and accuracy, with a softpoint or hollow point designed for controlled expansion on game. The GameKing is Sierra’s primary hunting bullet and delivers excellent accuracy with reliable terminal performance on deer-sized game at typical hunting ranges. The Tipped GameKing adds a polymer tip for more consistent expansion initiation at lower impact velocities for longer-range hunting.

Frequently Asked Questions: Sierra Bullets

Are Sierra bullets good for hunting?
Sierra GameKing and Tipped GameKing bullets are excellent hunting projectiles with a long track record on deer, elk, and other North American game. The MatchKing is NOT recommended for hunting — its hollow point is designed for accuracy, not expansion, and terminal performance on game is unpredictable.

What is the difference between MatchKing and Tipped MatchKing?
The Tipped MatchKing (TMK) adds a polymer tip to the MatchKing design — improving BC slightly and providing more consistent expansion for use on game, making it suitable as both a competition and hunting bullet. The standard MatchKing remains the competition choice where the tip may be less critical.
