Shotgun Chokes

A shotgun choke tube controls how tightly your shot pattern holds together at distance — the single most impactful variable in shotgun patterning after ammunition selection. Tighter chokes (Full, Extra Full, Turkey) hold patterns dense for longer shots; open chokes (Improved Cylinder, Skeet) spread patterns wider for close, fast-moving targets. Impact Guns carries choke tubes from Carlson’s, Jebs, Kicks Industries, Briley, and other manufacturers across every major shotgun threading system.

Choke Constrictions Explained

Choke constrictions range from most open to tightest: Cylinder (no constriction), Skeet, Improved Cylinder, Light Modified, Modified, Improved Modified, Full, Extra Full, and Turkey. For most hunting: Improved Cylinder for close upland birds and home defense, Modified for all-around upland and waterfowl, Full for pass-shooting and longer-range waterfowl, and Extra Full/Turkey for turkey hunting where maximum pattern density at 40–50 yards is the goal. For clay sports: Skeet for skeet, Light Modified or Modified for sporting clays, and Improved Modified or Full for trap.

Threading Systems: Which Choke Fits Your Shotgun

Choke tubes are NOT universal — they’re specific to your shotgun’s threading system. The most common systems: Remington/ProBore (Remington 870, 1100, Versa Max), Beretta/Benelli Mobil (most Beretta and Benelli shotguns), Beretta Optima Plus (newer Beretta A400 and 1301), Browning Invector (older Browning), Browning Invector-Plus (newer Browning and Winchester), Mossberg Accu-Choke (Mossberg 500, 590, 930), and Winchester WinChoke. Always verify your shotgun’s choke system before ordering.

Flush vs. Extended Chokes

Flush chokes sit inside the barrel, invisible from the outside — clean-looking and snag-free. Extended chokes protrude past the muzzle, providing a longer constriction taper that many shooters believe produces more uniform patterns, plus easy hand-removal without a choke wrench. Extended chokes are standard for competition and turkey hunting; flush chokes are standard for field and general hunting.

Turkey Chokes: Maximum Pattern Density

Turkey chokes are the tightest constriction available — Extra Full or beyond, designed to put the densest possible pattern of shot into a turkey’s head and neck at 40–50 yards. Jebs Headhunter, Carlson’s Longbeard, and Kicks Gobbling Thunder are among the most popular aftermarket turkey chokes. Pair with TSS (Tungsten Super Shot) ammunition for the best pattern density at maximum range. See our Turkey Shotguns page for the full setup.

Waterfowl Chokes: Steel Shot Compatibility

Not all choke tubes are rated for steel shot — steel is harder than lead and can damage chokes not designed for it. When shooting steel waterfowl loads, use chokes explicitly rated for steel shot. Generally, open one constriction from what you’d use with lead: if you’d shoot Modified with lead, use Improved Cylinder with steel. Many manufacturers offer chokes specifically labeled “waterfowl” or “non-toxic shot” that are designed for steel and bismuth loads.

Frequently Asked Questions

How do I know what choke system my shotgun uses?
Check your owner’s manual or the manufacturer’s website. The threading system is specific to the make and model — Remington, Beretta/Benelli Mobil, Browning Invector-Plus, Mossberg Accu-Choke, etc.

Are shotgun choke tubes universal?
No — they are specific to your shotgun’s threading system. A Remington choke will not fit a Beretta, and vice versa.

What choke should I use for home defense?
Improved Cylinder or Cylinder — you want the widest pattern at short indoor distances (7–15 yards).

What choke is best for turkey?
Extra Full or a dedicated turkey choke from Carlson’s, Jebs, or Kicks, paired with TSS or heavyweight turkey loads.

Can I shoot slugs through a choke tube?
Improved Cylinder or Cylinder chokes are safe for standard rifled slugs. Never shoot slugs through Full or tighter chokes.
