Leather Holsters
Leather holsters have carried firearms for over a century — and for good reason. A quality leather holster molds gradually to the specific firearm and the wearer's body, eventually providing a custom fit that no other material replicates. Leather breathes against the skin better than Kydex, presents naturally in professional and dress environments, and ages into a functional piece of equipment with real character. Impact Guns carries leather holsters from Galco, DeSantis, Bianchi, and other leading leather goods manufacturers.

Leather Holster Buying Guide
How Leather Holsters Break In
New leather holsters require a break-in period — the leather needs to soften and conform to the specific firearm before retention and draw become consistent. The traditional method is to wrap the unloaded firearm in a plastic bag (to protect the finish), insert it into the holster, and leave it overnight or for several days. This allows the leather to take the shape of the gun without the plastic bag's moisture damaging the finish. After break-in, the holster should retain the firearm firmly but release cleanly on a deliberate draw. Leather conditioners like Neatsfoot oil extend holster life and prevent cracking — apply lightly every few months depending on use.
Pancake vs. Single-Slot: OWB Leather Styles
The pancake holster is the most common OWB leather design — two pieces of leather stitched together with belt slots at the top, positioning the holster flat against the hip. The two-slot design distributes the gun's weight evenly and keeps the holster stable during movement. Single-slot designs use one belt loop and are more compact but less stable under the weight of heavier pistols. For full-size and compact pistols in OWB leather carry, the pancake is the superior choice for stability and concealment.
Leather for IWB Carry
IWB leather holsters offer a comfort advantage over Kydex against the skin — leather flexes slightly with body movement and doesn't create the same pressure points that bare Kydex can produce in prolonged carry. The tradeoff is re-holstering: leather can collapse after the gun is drawn, making one-handed re-holstering difficult or impossible without looking down. For experienced carriers comfortable with their draw-reholster process, this is manageable. For new carriers or duty applications where one-handed reholstering under stress is required, Kydex is the safer choice.
Caring for Leather Holsters
Leather holsters exposed to daily body sweat need regular attention. Sweat contains salts and oils that dry out leather over time, causing cracking. Wipe the holster interior with a dry cloth after sweaty carry sessions. Apply a quality leather conditioner to the exterior every few months. Store leather holsters away from direct sunlight and heat. Never store a firearm in a leather holster long-term — the tanning chemicals in leather can cause surface corrosion on metal finishes over extended contact.
Frequently Asked Questions
Are leather holsters safe for carry?
Quality leather holsters from reputable manufacturers are safe for carry when properly broken in and maintained. The primary safety consideration is trigger coverage — ensure the holster fully covers the trigger guard with no gaps. Leather holsters that have softened to the point of collapsing around the trigger area should be retired. For appendix carry specifically, rigid Kydex is the preferred material for maximum trigger protection.
Do leather holsters damage gun finishes?
Long-term storage of a firearm in a leather holster can cause surface corrosion on blued steel finishes due to the tanning agents and retained moisture in the leather. For daily carry with regular use this is generally not an issue. For long-term storage, remove the firearm from the leather holster and store separately with a light coat of oil.
