Handgun Magazines
For handguns, the factory magazine is almost always the right answer — pistols are tuned around their factory feed geometry, and magazine-related malfunctions are the most common failure point in semi-auto handguns. Impact Guns carries factory magazines for Glock, Sig Sauer, Smith & Wesson, Springfield, Ruger, CZ, Taurus, and every other major handgun brand, plus quality extended and state-compliant options.

Why Factory Magazines Matter for Pistols
Unlike AR-15s where aftermarket magazines match factory quality, most handguns run most reliably on factory magazines. Pistol feeding is sensitive to feed lip geometry, spring tension, and follower angle — small deviations cause failures to feed. Glock factory magazines, Sig factory magazines, and S&W factory magazines are manufactured to the same spec as the magazines your pistol shipped with. The notable exceptions: Mec-Gar produces OEM magazines for several manufacturers and their aftermarket line is factory-equivalent for CZ, Sig classic P-series, and Beretta.
Extended Magazines and Capacity Upgrades
Many popular carry pistols accept higher-capacity magazines from larger models in the same family — a Glock 26 accepts Glock 19 and 17 magazines; a Sig P365 upgrades from 10 to 12, 15, or 17 rounds with factory extended magazines; the Springfield Hellcat offers 11, 13, and 15-round options. Extended magazines make excellent reload magazines for concealed carry — carry the flush-fit in the gun and the extended on the belt. Factory extensions are more reliable than aftermarket basepad conversions for defensive use.
Magazine Springs and Maintenance
Magazine springs are the wear item in any magazine. Symptoms of a worn spring: failures to feed the last rounds, sluggish follower movement, or the slide failing to lock back on empty. Springs are inexpensive and replaceable — Wolff Gunsprings produces replacement springs for nearly every pistol magazine. Defensive carry magazines should be rotated and inspected periodically; competition shooters often replace springs annually. Disassemble and clean magazines when cleaning the pistol — grit in the magazine body is a common malfunction cause.
State-Compliant 10-Round Magazines
For buyers in capacity-restricted states, factory 10-round magazines are produced for nearly every popular handgun model. These are the same quality as standard-capacity factory magazines, simply limited internally or dimensionally to 10 rounds. When ordering a pistol for delivery to a restricted state, confirm the listing includes compliant magazines or order them separately. See our state legal guns section for compliant firearm packages.
Frequently Asked Questions
How many magazines should I have for a carry pistol?
A practical minimum is four to five: one in the gun, one or two carried as reloads, and the rest in rotation for training. Magazines wear out with use, and having spares means a failing magazine gets retired immediately rather than pressed back into service. Dry-fire and reload practice also goes through magazines faster than most shooters expect.
Will Glock 17 magazines work in a Glock 19?
A Glock 17 magazine functions in a Glock 19 — it extends below the grip but feeds normally, making it a popular reload option. The reverse is not true: a Glock 19 magazine is too short for a Glock 17. This compatibility runs throughout the Glock family — larger-frame magazines work in smaller same-caliber models, never the reverse.
Are aftermarket pistol magazines reliable?
It depends on the maker. Mec-Gar is OEM-quality and manufactures factory magazines for several brands. Magpul’s Glock-pattern PMAGs have a strong reliability record. Generic budget aftermarket magazines are the most common source of pistol malfunctions and are not recommended for defensive use. For carry guns, factory or Mec-Gar; budget aftermarket only for range practice.
