FN SCAR 17

The FN SCAR 17S is the semi-automatic civilian version of the battle-proven SCAR-H, chambered in 7.62x51mm NATO and built to the same specification as the rifles fielded by U.S. Special Operations Forces. A short-stroke gas piston operating system, side-folding adjustable stock, and free-float Picatinny rail system deliver the reliability and accuracy of a military-grade battle rifle in a package that performs equally well at the range and in the field.

7.62x51mm NATO Platform

The SCAR 17S is chambered in 7.62x51mm NATO (.308 Winchester), a full-power rifle cartridge with significantly more energy and longer effective range than the 5.56x45mm in the SCAR 16S. The 7.62 cartridge makes the SCAR 17S well-suited for longer-range precision work, hunting, and applications where terminal performance matters past 300 yards. The standard 16-inch barrel produces excellent velocity while keeping the overall package reasonably compact for a .308 platform.

Gas Piston Operating System

Unlike direct impingement AR platforms, the SCAR 17S uses a short-stroke gas piston that keeps combustion gases and carbon out of the receiver. The result is a rifle that runs cleaner under sustained fire and is more tolerant of suppressor use and adverse conditions. The gas regulator is fully adjustable to accommodate different ammunition types and suppressor configurations. This is the same operating principle FN supplies to the U.S. military, refined for the civilian semi-automatic platform.

Folding Stock and Ergonomics

The SCAR 17S’s side-folding stock collapses to the right side of the receiver for transport and storage, reducing overall length significantly without requiring stock removal. The stock adjusts for both length of pull and cheek weld height—useful for different body types and optic heights. Ambidextrous controls include the charging handle, safety, and magazine release. The polymer upper receiver keeps weight manageable for a full-power .308 platform.

Optics and Rail System

The free-float Picatinny top rail runs the full length of the receiver and handguard, with additional rail sections at 3, 6, and 9 o’clock positions for accessories. The SCAR 17S is popular with LPVO setups in the 1–6x or 1–8x range, which take full advantage of the rifle’s accuracy at distance while maintaining close-range capability. The flat top design accommodates virtually any optic mount without modification.

SCAR 17S vs. SCAR 16S

The SCAR 16S is chambered in 5.56x45mm—lighter, higher capacity, and more affordable to feed. The SCAR 17S gives up some capacity and adds weight but delivers significantly more energy at range. 5.56 makes sense for most range and defensive applications; 7.62 makes sense when range, barrier penetration, or hunting is the priority. Many serious SCAR owners eventually own both.

Frequently Asked Questions

What makes the FN SCAR 17S better than an AR-10?
The SCAR 17S uses a short-stroke gas piston system rather than direct impingement, which keeps the bolt carrier group cooler and cleaner under sustained fire. The folding stock, reciprocating charging handle, and ambidextrous controls make it more adaptable to different shooting positions. The tradeoff is cost — the SCAR 17S is significantly more expensive than a comparable AR-10. For a semi-automatic .308 rifle used primarily for hunting and range shooting, a quality AR-10 delivers equivalent accuracy at lower cost. For a semi-automatic .308 battle rifle where reliability under hard use and modularity are priorities, the SCAR 17S justifies its price.

What caliber is the FN SCAR 17S?
The SCAR 17S is chambered in 7.62x51mm NATO / .308 Winchester — these are functionally interchangeable in the SCAR 17S's chamber. It fires from a 16.25-inch barrel and uses proprietary FN SCAR magazines. The SCAR 16S is the 5.56 NATO variant — the two rifles are not magazine compatible.

Is the FN SCAR 17S legal in California?
The standard SCAR 17S with its folding stock and pistol grip is not compliant with California's assault weapon laws as configured. California-compliant variants exist through aftermarket feature modifications. See our California legal guns page for details.

Does Impact Guns carry the FN SCAR 17S?
Yes. Impact Guns carries the FN SCAR 17S at our Ogden and Boise stores and ships to FFL dealers nationwide. See our FN America brand page for the full FN lineup.
