USPSA and IDPA: Pistol Competition
USPSA (United States Practical Shooting Association) and IDPA (International Defensive Pistol Association) are the two most popular action pistol sports in the US. USPSA's most accessible division is Production — striker-fired pistols with minimal modifications, factory magazines capped at 10 rounds in major competitions. The Glock 17 and 34, Sig Sauer P320, CZ Shadow 2, and Canik SFx Rival are the most popular Production division pistols. Carry Optics division allows red dots on otherwise stock pistols — the fastest-growing division. For new competitors, USPSA Production or IDPA SSP (Stock Service Pistol) is the recommended starting point. See our Glock 34 and Canik pages for popular competition options.
3-Gun: Multi-Discipline Competition
3-Gun competition uses a pistol, rifle, and shotgun across stages that require all three. For the rifle, an AR-15 with a 1-6x LPVO, quality trigger, and reliable magazine is the starting point. For the pistol, a full-size striker-fired 9mm (Glock 17, M&P 2.0, Sig P320) in a competition holster. For the shotgun, a semi-automatic 12 gauge with an extended magazine — the Mossberg 930, Beretta 1301 Tactical, and Benelli M2 are the most popular 3-Gun shotguns. See our AR-15 rifles, LPVO, and shotguns pages for related options.
Precision Rifle Competition
Precision Rifle Series (PRS) competition involves engaging small targets at long distances from field positions using a bolt-action rifle. The Ruger Precision Rifle, Tikka T3x TAC A1, and Bergara B-14 HMR are the most recommended entry points. Caliber: 6mm Creedmoor and 6.5 Creedmoor are the dominant competition calibers. A quality 5-25x first focal plane scope, bipod, and rear bag are the essential supporting components. See our Ruger Precision Rifle and Bergara pages for starting options.
Steel Challenge: The Fastest Draw Sport
Steel Challenge is a pure speed shooting sport — five steel targets, fastest aggregate time wins, no movement required. The Ruger Mark IV, Browning Buckmark, and S&W Victory .22 LR pistols dominate rimfire divisions at minimal cost per round. In centerfire, the Glock 17/34 and CZ Shadow 2 are popular choices. Steel Challenge rewards trigger work and draw technique over equipment, making it one of the most accessible entry points for new competitive shooters.
Starting Equipment vs. Upgrading
The most common mistake new competitive shooters make is over-investing in equipment before developing the fundamentals. A factory Glock 17 in USPSA Production or a factory AR-15 in 3-Gun Tac Iron will not be the limiting factor for years of competition. Start with production-legal equipment, identify specific performance gaps through competition, then make targeted upgrades based on what you actually need rather than what looks impressive.
