Century Arms Draco

The Century Arms Draco is the definitive AK-pattern pistol—a short-barreled, magazine-fed 7.62x39 semi-automatic that delivers AK reliability in a compact, pistol-legal format. Imported and built by Century Arms International, the Draco family comes in three sizes: the original Draco (11.5” barrel), the Mini Draco (7.75” barrel), and the Micro Draco (6.25” barrel). All three are classified as pistols, accept standard AK magazines, and have earned a devoted following among AK enthusiasts, SBR builders, and collectors who want maximum firepower in a compact package.

Draco vs. Mini Draco vs. Micro Draco: Which Size Is Right for You?

The three Draco variants differ primarily in barrel length and overall size. The original Draco (11.5”) is the most balanced—enough barrel for reasonable 7.62x39 velocity while remaining far more compact than a standard AK rifle. The Mini Draco (7.75”) is the most popular variant, hitting the sweet spot between compact size and shootability. The Micro Draco (6.25”) is the most compact and the most challenging to shoot accurately due to its aggressive muzzle blast and recoil with such a short barrel. Most buyers choose the Mini Draco as the practical daily driver; the Micro is primarily for collectors and SBR builds.

Are Draco Pistols Legal? NFA Rules and Brace Configurations

All Draco variants are federally legal as pistols—they ship without a stock, which keeps them out of the short-barreled rifle (SBR) category requiring NFA registration. Adding a pistol brace is legal and does not change the classification. Converting a Draco to a stock-equipped SBR requires a Form 1 tax stamp filed with the ATF; since January 1, 2026, the NFA tax stamp fee has been eliminated, making the SBR conversion process significantly more accessible. Adding a vertical foregrip to a Draco pistol would reclassify it as an Any Other Weapon (AOW), which is a separate NFA category—angled foregrips are legal without NFA registration.

Century Arms Quality: What to Expect From a Draco

Century Arms Draco pistols are built on stamped steel receivers with chrome-lined barrels and use a standard AK-pattern gas-operated action. Quality has been consistent across recent production runs—the Draco is not a match-grade precision instrument, but it is a reliable AK-pattern firearm that functions correctly with a wide range of 7.62x39 ammunition including steel-cased bulk ammo. The finish is functional rather than refined. For buyers coming from premium AK builders like Zastava or Arsenal, the Draco trades some fit-and-finish refinement for a notably lower price point and wide availability.

Magazine Compatibility and Aftermarket Support

All Draco variants accept standard AK-pattern 7.62x39 magazines, which is one of the most abundant magazine formats in the world. PMAG AK/AKM MOE magazines, Magpul PMAG 30 AK/AKM, surplus steel magazines, and Zastava-pattern magazines all function reliably in the Draco. The pistol grip, handguard, and trigger group are all standard AK-pattern parts, so the aftermarket is extensive. Adding a Picatinny rail to the dust cover or handguard for optic mounting is a common modification. The Draco also accepts the same cleaning kit and spare parts as any AK-pattern rifle.

Draco as an SBR Build Platform

The Mini Draco in particular has become one of the most popular AK-pattern SBR build platforms. With the NFA tax stamp fee eliminated as of January 1, 2026, filing a Form 1 to add a folding stock to a Mini Draco is more accessible than ever. A Mini Draco SBR with a side-folding stock and a red dot becomes an extremely compact but capable 7.62x39 carbine. Popular additions include the Magpul Zhukov folding stock adapter, an Ultimak gas tube rail for forward optic mounting, and a muzzle brake or suppressor adapter.
