Benelli M2
The Benelli M2 is Benelli’s core semi-automatic shotgun platform and one of the best-selling sporting semi-auto shotguns in the world, using Benelli’s patented inertia-driven operating system to deliver reliable cycling across the widest range of loads of any semi-auto shotgun — from light 7/8-ounce target loads to 3-inch magnums — in a lightweight, simple design with fewer moving parts than gas-operated alternatives.

Benelli Inertia System: Why It Works So Well
The Benelli inertia system uses the rearward force of recoil to cycle the action rather than tapping gas from the barrel. When the gun fires, the bolt assembly compresses a strong inertia spring, which then releases and drives the bolt rearward to eject the spent shell and chamber the next round. This design has no gas ports to foul, no gas pistons to clean, and no valves to adjust — the action stays cleaner longer and requires less maintenance than gas-operated semi-autos. The tradeoff is that inertia systems require a minimum recoil impulse to cycle, meaning very light loads that don’t generate enough force may not cycle reliably. With standard target loads and heavier, this is not a practical concern.
Benelli M2 Field vs. M2 Tactical
The M2 Field is the hunting and sporting configuration, available with 24, 26, or 28-inch ventilated rib barrels in walnut or synthetic stocks, chambered in 12 or 20 gauge. It is one of the most popular upland, waterfowl, and turkey hunting shotguns available. The M2 Tactical is a shorter-barreled (18.5-inch) home defense and law enforcement configuration with ghost ring sights, extended magazine tube, and synthetic furniture. Both use the same inertia-driven action; the Tactical is also widely used as a 3-Gun competition shotgun due to its reliability, short cycle time, and available extended magazine tubes.
Benelli M2 for 3-Gun Competition
The M2 is one of the most popular shotguns in 3-Gun and multigun competition. Its fast inertia cycle time, short overall length in Tactical configuration, reliability with diverse loads, and compatibility with aftermarket extended magazine tubes (Nordic Components, Benelli factory) make it a benchmark 3-Gun shotgun. Top-tier 3-Gun competitors run M2 Tacticals with 9+ round extensions as their primary competition shotgun, and the platform has won more major 3-Gun titles than any other semi-auto shotgun.
Benelli M2 vs. Beretta A400: Inertia vs. Gas
The M2 (inertia) and A400 (gas) represent the two dominant semi-auto operating systems for sporting use. The M2’s inertia system is lighter, simpler, and requires less cleaning. The A400’s BLINK gas system cycles faster and handles a broader range of loads including very light sub-loads that inertia guns may not cycle. For competition and field use with standard loads, the M2 is the more popular choice. For clay shooters who use very light target loads or for shooters who want maximum load versatility, the A400’s gas system has the advantage.
Frequently Asked Questions: Benelli M2
What gauge does the Benelli M2 come in?
The M2 is available in 12 gauge and 20 gauge. The 12 gauge has a 3-inch chamber; select 20 gauge models are also available. The M4 is the separate 12-gauge military/tactical model with a different operating system.
Is the Benelli M2 reliable with light loads?
The M2 cycles reliably with standard 1-ounce loads at 1,200 fps and above. Very light 7/8-ounce or reduced-recoil loads may not generate sufficient recoil to cycle the inertia system. For clay shooters using light ammo, verify cycling with your specific load before competition use.
How many rounds does the Benelli M2 hold?
The standard M2 Field holds 2+1 in most configurations due to plug requirements; without a plug, 4+1. The M2 Tactical holds 5+1 with the factory tube; aftermarket extended tubes can reach 8+ rounds.
Is the Benelli M2 good for 3-Gun?
Yes — the M2 Tactical is one of the most popular 3-Gun competition shotguns at the national and world level. Its reliability, fast cycle time, and extended magazine compatibility make it a top choice for serious competitors.
