Shoulder Holsters
Shoulder holsters suspend the firearm under the non-dominant arm via a harness system that distributes weight across both shoulders. They are best suited for full-size pistols and revolvers that are too large or heavy for practical waist carry, for extended periods of seated carry (driving, desk work), and for cold weather carry under a jacket or coat. The Galco Miami Classic — worn by Sonny Crockett in Miami Vice and by US Marshals for decades — remains the benchmark shoulder holster design. Impact Guns carries shoulder holsters for all major full-size pistol platforms.

Vertical vs. Horizontal Shoulder Holsters
Shoulder holsters orient the firearm in one of two ways. Vertical holsters position the gun muzzle-down — the grip points upward, allowing a natural upward draw across the body. This orientation is more compact and works better under close-fitting jackets. Horizontal holsters position the gun parallel to the ground, muzzle pointing rearward. The horizontal orientation allows a faster, more natural cross-draw and is the traditional "detective" carry look — the Galco Miami Classic uses this design. The tradeoff is that a horizontally carried firearm points its muzzle at anyone standing behind you, which requires careful muzzle discipline and is a concern in some professional environments.
When Shoulder Carry Makes Sense
Shoulder holsters shine in specific situations. For extended driving or desk work, the shoulder position is often the most accessible — IWB holsters can compress and become uncomfortable when seated for hours, while a shoulder holster's gun remains easily accessible. For cold weather carry under a heavy coat or jacket, the shoulder position allows the cover garment to fully conceal a full-size pistol without the belt area constraints of IWB carry. For full-size revolvers and large-frame pistols (.357 Magnum, .45 ACP full size) that are too heavy for practical IWB, shoulder carry distributes the weight comfortably across both shoulders.
Cover Garment Requirements
Shoulder holsters require a jacket, coat, or vest to conceal — there is no practical way to conceal a shoulder holster under a t-shirt or untucked button-down. This is the primary limitation of shoulder carry for year-round use in warm climates. For cold weather states or professions where a jacket is standard attire, this is not a meaningful constraint. The cover garment must be able to open quickly on the draw side — buttons, zippers, or snaps that require two-handed opening before drawing add significant time to the presentation.
Harness Fit and Adjustment
A properly fitted shoulder holster should rest with the gun at approximately mid-chest height on the non-dominant side, with the harness straps sitting flat on the shoulders without cutting in. Most shoulder holsters include a tie-down strap that runs from the bottom of the holster to the belt on the gun side, keeping the holster from swinging outward during movement. This tie-down is important for concealment and stability — without it, the holster moves when you walk or reach. Balance the rig with a spare magazine carrier or counterweight pouch on the opposite side.
Frequently Asked Questions
Are shoulder holsters comfortable for all-day carry?
A well-fitted leather shoulder holster with a full-size pistol is comfortable for extended wear, particularly when seated. The weight distribution across both shoulders is genuinely more comfortable than belt carry for large, heavy pistols over many hours. The harness requires a break-in period similar to leather holsters — new harnesses can feel stiff until the leather softens to your body shape.
What pistols work best in shoulder holsters?
Full-size pistols and revolvers with 4–6 inch barrels are the traditional shoulder carry platform — the 1911, Beretta 92, Glock 17, and full-size revolvers in .357 Magnum. Compact pistols work in shoulder holsters but are more commonly carried at the waist. The shoulder rig's weight distribution advantage is most meaningful with larger, heavier guns.
Does Impact Guns carry shoulder holsters?
Yes. Impact Guns carries shoulder holsters for full-size pistols and revolvers at our Ogden and Boise stores and ships nationwide.
