Stocks & Forends

A stock determines fit, cheek weld consistency, and length of pull—all of which directly affect accuracy and comfort. Impact Guns carries AR-15 collapsible and fixed stocks, replacement stocks for bolt-action hunting rifles, and precision chassis systems for competition and long-range use. For the full AR-15 specific stock selection including Magpul, Luth-AR, and B5 Systems options, see our dedicated AR-15 Stocks page.

AR-15 Collapsible Stocks: Upgrades Over Mil-Spec

The standard mil-spec collapsible stock provides six length-of-pull positions but has noticeable wobble on the buffer tube. Magpul’s CTR and STR stocks eliminate this wobble with friction locks, providing solid lockup at any position. The CTR is the most popular AR stock upgrade for its simplicity. For a precision-oriented build, Luth-AR’s MBA-1 provides independent cheek height and length-of-pull adjustment. For the complete AR-15 stock selection, see: AR-15 Stocks.

Precision Rifle Chassis Systems

Precision rifle chassis replace a traditional stock with an aluminum chassis accepting AICS-pattern detachable box magazines and providing fully adjustable length of pull and cheek height. MDT and Kinetic Research Group produce chassis for Remington 700, Ruger American, and Savage actions. A chassis is the single most transformative upgrade for a bolt-action rifle being moved to precision competition—providing magazine capacity, adjustability, and rail mounting points a traditional stock cannot. Hunting Rifle Replacement Stocks

Traditional bolt-action hunting rifles use fixed stocks in wood, laminate, or synthetic configurations. Synthetic stocks (Bell & Carlson, McMillan, HS Precision) maintain consistent point of impact across temperature and humidity changes better than wood. Replacement stocks for Remington 700, Winchester Model 70, and Savage rifles allow ergonomic upgrades without replacing the action. For most hunting applications, a quality synthetic stock paired with a reliable scope is the most practical accuracy upgrade. See also: Hunting Rifles.

Frequently Asked Questions: Stocks & Forends

What is the difference between a fixed and adjustable stock?
A fixed stock has a single length of pull — suitable for one shooter’s dimensions, less adjustable for different clothing layers or different shooters. An adjustable or collapsible stock (like the Magpul CTR or MOE on AR-15s) allows length of pull adjustment for different shooters and shooting positions, and folds or collapses for compact storage and transport. For AR-15 builds, a collapsible stock is standard; for precision rifles, a fixed stock often provides more rigidity, while chassis systems with adjustable length of pull and cheek weld are the competition standard.

What is an AR-15 chassis vs. a traditional stock?
A chassis system replaces the traditional rifle stock with a rigid aluminum or steel framework that positions the action at a precise, adjustable geometry. Chassis systems (MDT, Magpul Pro, KRG Bravo) offer precise length of pull and cheek height adjustment, typically fit standard AR-15 pistol grips and stocks, and provide V-block bedding for the action. They are standard equipment for precision rifle competition. Traditional stocks — whether synthetic, laminate, or wood — are lighter and adequate for most hunting and general use.

Does a replacement stock affect accuracy?
For bolt-action rifles, a free-floated stock that doesn’t contact the barrel, combined with a proper pillar or epoxy bedding of the action, can meaningfully improve accuracy by eliminating pressure variations between shots. A quality replacement stock with proper bedding on a factory sporter rifle can unlock accuracy the original stock was masking. For AR-15s, stock replacement is primarily an ergonomic upgrade — barrel free-float is determined by the handguard, not the stock.
