Folding Knives
Folding knives are the most versatile category in the knife world — from slim EDC pocket knives under 3 inches to full-size tactical folders with 4-inch blades, the folding format puts serious cutting capability in a pocketable package. Impact Guns carries folding knives across the spectrum from budget-friendly daily users to premium American-made folders from Benchmade and Spyderco.

Manual vs. Assisted Opening vs. Automatic Folding Knives
Manual folding knives open by thumb stud, flipper tab, or Spyderco-style hole. Assisted opening knives use an internal spring that takes over once the blade is partially opened — faster than a manual but not a true automatic. Automatic (switchblade) folding knives deploy fully with a button press. Assisted openers are legal in virtually all jurisdictions; automatics carry more legal restrictions. For most EDC users, a quality assisted opener from Kershaw or CRKT delivers fast, legal deployment without the legal complexity of a true automatic.
Blade Steel: What Matters for Everyday Use
Folding knife blade steel determines edge retention, corrosion resistance, and ease of sharpening. For EDC, mid-range steels like 154CM, S30V, and D2 hit the sweet spot — excellent edge retention, reasonable corrosion resistance, and easy enough to sharpen at home. Premium steels like M390, S110V, and CTS-204P hold an edge longer but require more effort to resharpen. For a work knife that gets sharpened regularly, a well-heat-treated 154CM or D2 outperforms a poorly-treated premium steel. Brand reputation for heat treatment matters as much as the steel specification.
EDC Folding Knife Size: What Blade Length Is Right?
Everyday carry folding knives typically run 2.5” to 3.5” blades — long enough for practical cutting tasks, short enough to carry comfortably and legally in most jurisdictions. Tactical folders often run 3.5” to 4” for more aggressive cutting capability. Most U.S. states allow blades up to 3” or 3.5” for concealed carry; check your local laws for specifics. For pure EDC utility, a 3” drop point in quality steel covers the vast majority of daily cutting tasks.
