MP5 Clones
The MP5 is arguably the most recognizable submachine gun ever made—a Heckler & Koch design that has appeared on the hips of special operations units, hostage rescue teams, and SWAT officers worldwide for over 50 years. Today, civilian-legal semi-auto versions are available from HK (the SP5 and SP5K), Century Arms (the AP5 and AP5-P), and B&T (the SPC9). All use the roller-delayed blowback action that gives the MP5 its characteristic smooth, accurate fire. Whether you want the authentic HK-made version or a more accessible clone, there are more good options available now than at any point in the MP5’s history.

HK SP5 vs Century Arms AP5: Which MP5 Should You Buy?
The HK SP5 is the authentic factory HK-made semi-auto MP5, manufactured in Germany and imported into the U.S. It carries genuine HK quality, HK price, and the ability to accept HK-made accessories directly. The Century Arms AP5 is a Turkish-made clone that uses the same roller-delayed action and accepts MP5 magazines, at a fraction of the cost. For buyers who want the real thing and are willing to pay the premium, the SP5 is the answer. For buyers who want the MP5 experience and functionality without the premium price, the AP5 delivers the same roller-delayed action at significant savings. Both accept the same 30-round MP5 magazines.
MP5K vs Full-Size MP5: Compact or Standard Configuration?
The MP5K (“K” for Kurz, German for “short”) is the compact variant with a 4.5-inch barrel versus the standard MP5’s 8.9-inch barrel. In semi-auto pistol configuration, the MP5K-pattern guns (like the HK SP5K and Century AP5-P) are more maneuverable and easier to transport, while the full-size offers better velocity and is easier to shoot accurately at distance. For home defense or vehicle use, the compact K-pattern makes sense. For range use, competition, or anyone who wants to add a stock, the full-size is the better platform. Since the NFA $200 tax stamp was eliminated January 1, 2026, adding a registered stock is also now a simpler proposition.
The Roller-Delayed Blowback Action: Why MP5 Fans Are Loyal
The MP5’s roller-delayed blowback action is a direct descendant of the WWII-era German G3 battle rifle mechanism. Two rollers on the bolt carrier lock into recesses in the trunnion during the firing cycle, delaying the bolt opening just long enough to allow chamber pressure to drop safely. The result is a notably smooth, low-felt-recoil firing cycle compared to straight blowback 9mm guns. This contributes to the MP5’s reputation for accuracy in semi-auto fire. The same mechanism has been used by HK across their G3 rifle, HK33, and numerous other designs—it’s proven over 70 years of continuous production.
MP5 Magazines: What to Know Before You Buy
Standard MP5 magazines hold 10, 15, or 30 rounds and are available from HK, Lancer, and MKE (the Turkish manufacturer that also makes Century Arms AP5 components). The 30-round steel magazine is the most practical for range use. Unlike Glock-magazine-fed PCCs like the Sub-2000 or CX4 Storm, the MP5 uses a proprietary curved magazine that does not interchange with common pistol magazines—so plan your magazine supply accordingly. H&K drum magazines and 40-round magazines are available but less common. Lancer L5AWM-pattern MP5 magazines offer a window for round count verification and are a popular aftermarket choice.
MP5 Accessories: Stocks, Optics, and Suppressors
The MP5 platform has a rich aftermarket. The collapsing three-position stock is the most iconic accessory and widely available; the fixed A2 stock gives a more stable cheek weld for precision shooting. A Picatinny top rail adapter or a dedicated carry handle with integrated rail allows mounting of red dot sights—the HK SL8 rail and MNT-MP5QD are popular choices. The MP5’s threaded barrel (on most modern variants) makes suppressor installation straightforward, and the roller-delayed action is widely considered one of the most suppressor-friendly designs ever made. With NFA tax stamps eliminated as of January 1, 2026, suppressed MP5 ownership has never been more practical.
