Pocket Holsters

A pocket holster allows a compact or subcompact pistol to be carried in the front pocket of pants or shorts. The holster performs two critical functions: it covers the trigger guard completely to prevent accidental discharge, and it breaks up the recognizable outline of the firearm through the pocket fabric so the gun doesn't print. A quality pocket holster also stays in the pocket during the draw stroke rather than coming out with the gun. Impact Guns carries pocket holsters for the most popular compact carry pistols.

What a Pocket Holster Must Do

A pocket holster has three non-negotiable requirements. First, it must cover the trigger guard completely — a firearm in a pocket without trigger protection is dangerous. Keys, coins, and other pocket contents can enter the trigger guard and cause an unintended discharge. Second, it must break up the gun's outline — the rectangular shape of a pistol in a pocket is immediately recognizable to trained observers. A good pocket holster squares off the profile so it looks like a wallet. Third, it must stay in the pocket when you draw — a holster that comes out with the gun forces a two-handed administrative reholster that is impractical in a defensive situation. Rubber or textured outer surfaces grip the pocket fabric and keep the holster in place.

Which Pistols Work for Pocket Carry

Pocket carry is practical only for the smallest pistol platforms. The Ruger LCP Max, Glock 42, Sig Sauer P238, Kimber Micro 9, and similar pistols in .380 ACP or compact 9mm are the standard pocket carry guns. Full-size and most compact pistols (Glock 19, P365 XL) are too large and heavy for practical pocket carry — they drag the pocket down, print excessively, and are slow to draw cleanly. The LCP Max is the benchmark pocket carry pistol — it was designed specifically for this application. See our Ruger LCP Max and pocket pistols pages for compatible firearms.

Front Pocket vs. Back Pocket Carry

Front pocket carry is strongly preferred over back pocket carry. Back pocket carry sits directly on the nerve cluster at the base of the spine — prolonged sitting compresses this area and can cause discomfort or nerve issues over time. Back pocket carry also positions the firearm behind you where drawing from a seated position (in a vehicle, for example) is extremely difficult. Front pocket carry keeps the gun accessible from both standing and seated positions and is more comfortable for all-day carry.

Pocket Carry as Primary vs. Backup

Pocket carry works well as a primary carry method in situations where IWB carry is impractical — formal dress occasions, extremely hot weather with minimal clothing, or environments where printing must be absolutely minimized. Many carriers use a pocket pistol as a backup to their primary IWB carry gun. For primary defensive carry, a pocket pistol's lower capacity and generally less-powerful caliber (.380 ACP) represent meaningful limitations — an IWB 9mm is a more capable primary defensive option when clothing allows.

Frequently Asked Questions

What is the best pocket holster?
DeSantis Nemesis is the most widely recommended pocket holster — its rubberized exterior grips pocket fabric reliably, it breaks up the gun outline effectively, and it's available for virtually all pocket pistol models. The Uncle Mike's Sidekick is a budget-friendly alternative. For Kydex pocket holsters, several custom makers produce excellent options for specific pistol models.

Can I carry a Glock 19 in a pocket?
Technically yes with a large enough pocket, but it's not recommended. The G19 is too heavy and large for practical pocket carry — it will drag the pocket down, print obviously, and be slow to access cleanly. The G43X is the smallest Glock that some carriers use for pocket carry in larger cargo-style pockets. For true pocket carry, the G42 or a comparable .380 is the right platform.

Does Impact Guns carry pocket holsters?
Yes. Impact Guns carries pocket holsters for all major compact carry pistols at our Ogden and Boise stores and ships nationwide.
