The .30-06 Springfield is one of the most proven rifle cartridges ever developed—introduced by the U.S. military in 1906, it served through two World Wars and has taken virtually every species of North American big game. Today the “thirty-ought-six” remains one of the most widely available hunting cartridges in the world, loaded by every major ammunition manufacturer in bullet weights from 110 to 220 grains. .30-06 vs. .308 Win: Which Should You Choose?

The .308 Winchester and .30-06 Springfield fire the same .308” diameter bullets but differ in case capacity and available rifle platforms. The .30-06 has a longer case, generating slightly higher velocities—typically 100–150 fps faster with equivalent bullet weights. The .308 Win fits in a short-action receiver, making those rifles lighter and more compact. In practical hunting terms, both cartridges perform nearly identically on deer and elk-sized game inside 400 yards. The .30-06 holds a slight edge at longer ranges and with heavier bullets. The .308 offers a wider selection of semi-automatic platforms including the AR-10. For bolt-action hunting, the choice often comes down to which rifle you prefer.

.30-06 Bullet Weights: Matching Ammo to Your Application

The .30-06 is loaded in a wide range of bullet weights, each suited to different applications. 150-grain loads are the most common and offer the flattest trajectory—ideal for deer, antelope, and open-country hunting where shots may exceed 300 yards. 165-grain loads balance velocity and sectional density well, making them versatile for deer through elk. 180-grain loads are the standard choice for elk, moose, and bear—the heavier bullet retains energy better at distance and penetrates deeper on large-bodied animals. 220-grain loads are specialized for dangerous game or subsonic suppressor use. For range training, 147–150 grain FMJ is the most economical option.

Best .30-06 Ammo for Deer Hunting

For deer hunting, premium controlled-expansion bullets outperform basic soft points in consistency and terminal performance. Federal Premium with the Nosler Partition or Trophy Bonded Tip, Hornady Precision Hunter with ELD-X bullets, and Winchester Ballistic Silvertip loads all perform exceptionally on whitetail and mule deer. These bonded or polymer-tipped designs expand reliably at the full velocity range of .30-06, from close shots inside 100 yards to longer shots at 400+ yards where velocity has dropped significantly. For hunters on a budget, Federal Power-Shok and Remington Core-Lokt in 150 or 165 grain remain reliable, proven performers at lower cost.

30-06 for Elk and Large Game

The .30-06 has taken more North American elk than perhaps any other cartridge, and it remains fully adequate for the task with proper bullet selection. For elk, choose a 180-grain controlled-expansion load—the Barnes TTSX, Federal Trophy Bonded, or Hornady InterBond. These bullets are engineered to hold together and penetrate deeply through the shoulder or ribs of an animal that can weigh 700+ pounds. Shot placement remains more important than bullet choice, but a premium bonded 180-grain load provides the margin needed for shots at steep angles or in heavy brush where the bullet may encounter bone before reaching vitals.

.30-06 Rifles: What Platforms Are Available?

The .30-06 is chambered in virtually every bolt-action platform—Remington 700, Winchester Model 70, Browning X-Bolt, Tikka T3x, Savage 110, Ruger American, and Mossberg Patriot all offer .30-06 variants. Semi-automatic options are more limited; the M1 Garand is the most famous .30-06 semi-auto and remains collectible and shootable. The Springfield M1A and AR-10 pattern rifles are chambered in .308 Win rather than .30-06.
