Smith & Wesson Model 642

The Smith & Wesson Model 442 and Model 642 are the gold standard of pocket carry revolvers — 5-shot, hammerless (shrouded hammer) .38 Special +P J-frame revolvers that have served as the definitive backup and deep concealment firearms for law enforcement officers and civilians for decades. The 442 uses an alloy frame with a traditional matte black finish; the 642 uses an alloy frame with a stainless steel cylinder for added corrosion resistance, making it the preferred carry choice in humid climates or for users who frequently carry in perspiration-prone environments. Both weigh approximately 15 oz. unloaded and measure under 7” overall.

442 vs. 642: What’s the Difference?

The Model 442 has an aluminum alloy frame and cylinder with a matte black finish throughout. The Model 642 has an aluminum alloy frame with a stainless steel cylinder — the cylinder’s superior corrosion resistance is the key differentiator. For daily carry in warm climates where perspiration contacts the gun, or for users who live in coastal or high-humidity areas, the 642’s stainless cylinder is meaningfully more corrosion-resistant than the 442’s alloy cylinder. The 642 also has a slight aesthetic difference — the two-tone appearance of the matte-black frame and silver cylinder. Functionally and mechanically, they are identical. For most buyers in moderate climates, the 442 is the practical choice; for high-humidity environments, go 642.

The Hammerless Design: Snag-Free by Intent

Neither the 442 nor 642 are truly hammerless — both have internal hammers, but the hammers are fully shrouded within the frame. This eliminates the external hammer spur that can snag on clothing during a draw from a pocket or ankle holster. The practical implication: these revolvers are DAO (double-action-only). Every pull of the trigger both cocks and releases the hammer. The trigger pull is approximately 10–12 lbs. and consistent throughout — the same for every shot. For pocket carry where snag-free draw and consistent trigger behavior are paramount, the shrouded hammer design is the definitive solution.

Best .38 Special +P Loads for the 442 & 642

Both revolvers are rated for .38 Special +P ammunition. Speer Gold Dot Short Barrel 135 gr. +P is specifically engineered for short-barrel revolvers and is the most widely recommended defensive load for the J-frame class. Federal HST 130 gr. +P is another excellent option. Standard-pressure .38 Special loads are perfectly adequate and produce less felt recoil — appropriate for practice and for shooters who find +P recoil in a 15 oz. revolver difficult to manage. The 1.875” barrel limits velocity significantly; loads designed for short barrels (like the Gold Dot SB) expand more reliably at the lower velocities these guns produce.

Pocket Carry: Holsters and Practical Carry Advice

The 442 and 642 are among the most pocket-carry-friendly revolvers made, but proper carry still requires a pocket holster. A bare revolver in a pocket will print severely, may rotate out of position, and risks trigger contact with pocket contents. DeSantis Nemesis, Uncle Mike’s, and Galco make pocket holsters specifically for J-frame revolvers that hold the gun in a consistent draw position and break up the profile. Ankle carry is also common with these revolvers — the weight of 15 oz. is comfortable on a quality ankle holster for backup or deep concealment use.

442 & 642 vs. Ruger LCR: J-Frame Competition

The Ruger LCR is the 442/642’s primary competition — a similarly-sized .38 Special +P hammerless revolver with a polymer frame and a notably lighter, smoother factory trigger. The LCR’s trigger is widely considered better out of the box than the S&W J-frame trigger. The S&W 442/642 has a longer track record, broader holster selection, and S&W’s reputation. Both are excellent. For shooters who prioritize trigger quality and are new to revolvers, the LCR is often recommended as a trainer. For shooters who want the definitive J-frame experience and maximum holster selection, the S&W is the classic choice.
