Choke Tubes
A choke tube is a threaded constriction at the muzzle that controls how tightly the shot pattern spreads. A tighter choke (Full) keeps patterns together at longer ranges; an open choke (Cylinder or Improved Cylinder) spreads the pattern quickly for close shots. Most modern shotguns use interchangeable choke tubes, allowing you to change the pattern for different applications. For turkey hunting, aftermarket chokes from Carlson’s, Kicks, Jebs, and Briley provide tighter patterns than factory tubes, extending effective turkey range. For waterfowl with steel shot, always use chokes rated for steel — full chokes are unsafe with steel. For trap and skeet, a Modified or Light Modified choke is standard.
Stocks and Forends
Replacing or upgrading a shotgun stock changes fit, feel, and functionality significantly. Synthetic stocks from Magpul (SGA Stock for Mossberg 500/590 and Remington 870) are among the most popular upgrades, adding adjustable length of pull and a better cheek weld over factory wood or standard synthetic. Adjustable stocks with pistol grips are popular for tactical and home defense applications. Traditional wood stocks can be replaced for aesthetic restoration on older shotguns. Hogue makes overmolded stocks that improve grip and reduce perceived recoil. Always verify compatibility with your specific shotgun model and gauge before ordering.
Barrels
A second barrel expands what your shotgun can do. A shorter 18.5″ or 20″ barrel on a pump gun makes it more maneuverable for home defense while the original 28″ hunting barrel stays ready for the field. Rifled slugs barrels with adjustable sights turn a smoothbore field gun into a capable slug gun for deer hunting. Mossberg, Remington, and Carlson’s all offer factory-spec replacement barrels for the most popular pump shotguns. Barrel changes on Mossberg 500 and Remington 870 are tool-free and take under a minute.
Recoil Pads
A quality recoil pad reduces felt recoil, improves mount consistency, and can add length of pull to fit taller shooters. LimbSaver slip-on recoil pads fit over existing stocks without modification and are an easy upgrade for heavy recoil loads. Pachmayr and Kick-EEZ make replacement pads that require removing the factory pad and fitting the new one to the stock. For trap and sporting clays shooters who fire high round counts, a gel or air-cell recoil pad significantly reduces fatigue over long shooting sessions. Recoil pads also add a non-slip surface that keeps the stock from sliding off your shoulder during mounting.
Triggers and Internal Parts
Aftermarket trigger groups for popular pump and semi-auto shotguns can improve pull weight and reset. Timney makes drop-in trigger assemblies for Remington 870 and 1100 that replace the factory trigger group entirely. For competitive clay shooters, a lighter trigger pull improves timing consistency. Internal parts including extractors, ejectors, action bars, and springs are available as replacements for worn or damaged components. Brownells and Numrich Gun Parts stock an extensive catalog of factory-spec replacement parts for discontinued and current production shotguns.
