Night Vision

Night vision optics amplify available light to allow observation and shooting in low-light and dark conditions. Modern consumer night vision spans digital systems (camera-based, no image intensifier tube) and Gen 2/Gen 3 image intensifier tube systems, with digital units dominating the hunting and civilian tactical market for their affordability and integrated features. ATN, Pulsar, and Sightmark produce the most widely used digital night vision scopes and monoculars available to civilian buyers, offering features including ballistic calculators, video recording, Wi-Fi streaming, and rangefinders at prices accessible to serious hunters and tactical shooters.

Digital vs Image Intensifier Night Vision

Image intensifier tube (IIT) night vision—the Gen 2 and Gen 3 systems used by military and law enforcement—amplifies existing light through a photocathode tube, producing the classic green-tinted image. Gen 3 tubes offer the best low-light performance but cost $3,000–$10,000+ for quality optics. Digital night vision uses a CMOS or CCD sensor to capture and amplify light, processing it digitally and displaying it on an internal screen. Digital systems are significantly less expensive, offer color modes, daytime functionality, video recording, and integrated ballistic calculators, but their low-light performance in near-total darkness is generally inferior to Gen 3 tube-based systems. For hunters who are shooting hogs or coyotes at dusk and in moderate darkness, digital systems perform well. For operators who need maximum performance in complete darkness, Gen 3 tube systems remain the standard.

ATN Night Vision: X-Sight and Thor Series

ATN is the dominant brand in consumer digital night vision, offering the X-Sight LTV and X-Sight 4K series for rifle mounting. The X-Sight 4K Pro features 4K resolution, a built-in rangefinder, a ballistic calculator that adjusts point of aim for distance, and Wi-Fi streaming to a smartphone for a second observer. The ATN Thor series covers thermal imaging rather than night vision—it detects heat signatures rather than amplifying light, making it usable in complete darkness and through some cover. For a hunter running a dedicated night vision rifle for hog or coyote control, the ATN X-Sight 4K is the most feature-complete digital night vision scope available at its price point.

Pulsar Night Vision: Trail and Digex Series

Pulsar produces both digital night vision and thermal imaging products, with a reputation for build quality and image performance that competes well against ATN. The Pulsar Digex series offers digital night vision with a traditional rifle scope form factor and an integrated IR illuminator for use in complete darkness. The Pulsar Trail thermal scope series is popular for hog and predator hunters who need all-darkness capability beyond what digital night vision provides. Pulsar's thermal products are particularly well-regarded for their image clarity and detection range at moderate price points, making them a strong alternative to higher-priced FLIR and Trijicon thermal options.

Night Vision Monoculars and Goggles

Night vision monoculars and goggles serve observation rather than shooting roles—they are handheld or head-mounted devices for scanning terrain, navigating in darkness, or observing targets before engaging. The Sightmark Ghost Hunter and ATN monoculars are popular entry-level options for hunters who want to glass fields at night. Head-mounted night vision goggles (NVGs) allow hands-free movement in darkness and are popular for hunting guides and tactical use. NVG-compatible weapons can use a clip-on night vision device behind a day scope or a dedicated NVG-compatible front-mounted unit. For a hunter who primarily needs to locate and identify game at night before shooting, a monocular is more practical than a dedicated night vision rifle scope.

IR Illuminators: Extending Night Vision Range

All night vision systems—digital and IIT—perform better with supplemental infrared (IR) illumination. An IR illuminator emits infrared light invisible to the naked eye that the night vision system amplifies, dramatically extending the effective range in low ambient light conditions. Most ATN and Pulsar digital scopes include a built-in IR illuminator; dedicated external IR illuminators like the ATN IR850 extend the effective range further on larger properties. IR illuminators are invisible to game animals, making them appropriate for hunting use. For total-darkness hog hunting applications, a powerful external IR illuminator paired with a digital night vision scope is the most practical civilian setup available.
