Tannerite is the original binary exploding rifle target—a two-component mixture that is inert and safe to handle separately but produces a highly visible explosion and loud report when struck by a high-velocity rifle bullet. Used at shooting ranges and rural properties nationwide, Tannerite targets provide immediate visual confirmation of a hit at distances where steel targets may be too small to see clearly. How Tannerite Works
Tannerite ships as two separate inert components—an oxidizer (ammonium nitrate) and a fuel (aluminum powder). Neither component alone is explosive. When mixed together per the instructions and then struck by a rifle bullet traveling at sufficient velocity (typically 2,000+ fps), the mixture detonates. The explosion produces a white cloud, a loud report, and a visible flash at the target location. The binary nature is a key safety feature—the mixed target must be shot to detonate; it cannot be set off by fire, impact, or rough handling. This makes Tannerite significantly safer to transport and store than traditional pre-mixed explosives.
Tannerite Sizes: Which Should You Buy?
Tannerite is sold in 1/2-pound, 1-pound, and 2-pound single-target packages, as well as multi-packs for longer range sessions. A 1/2-pound target produces a clearly visible explosion at typical close-range distances. A 1-pound target is the most common choice for rifle-distance shooting at 100–300 yards. A 2-pound target produces a larger, more dramatic detonation for longer distances or shots from elevated positions. Federal regulations limit single mixed targets to 50 pounds maximum—the practical recommendation for recreational range use is 1-pound or smaller targets. What Calibers Detonate Tannerite?
Tannerite requires a bullet traveling at sufficient velocity to initiate detonation—typically 2,000 fps or faster at point of impact. Standard rifle cartridges (.223/5.56, .308, .30-06, 6.5 Creedmoor, and similar) reliably detonate Tannerite at normal shooting distances. Most handgun calibers (9mm, .45 ACP) traveling below 2,000 fps will not detonate Tannerite—a built-in safety feature. Subsonic .22 LR and standard handgun rounds typically will not initiate detonation. For planned use with a specific cartridge at a specific distance, verify bullet velocity at the target using a ballistic calculator to ensure reliable detonation.
Legal Requirements and Safe Use
Tannerite is legal to purchase and use as a shooting target in most U.S. states without a license, but use is subject to important safety and legal requirements. It must be detonated by rifle fire—never by fire, fuse, or other means. It must be used outdoors at appropriate safe distances, away from structures, vehicles, dry vegetation, and bystanders. Many states and localities have specific restrictions on use, particularly during fire season or in areas with dry conditions—always verify local regulations before use. The minimum safe shooting distance is 100 yards for 1-pound targets; larger amounts require greater standoff. Never place Tannerite in a container that could produce shrapnel when detonated.
