Tannerite Binary Exploding Targets

Tannerite is the original binary exploding target—a two-component mixture of ammonium nitrate and aluminum powder that is inert when separate but produces a dramatic explosion and white vapor cloud when struck by a high-velocity rifle bullet. Used for long-range target practice, reactive shooting training, and just making range days more entertaining, Tannerite has been the standard exploding target brand since its introduction in 1996. Impact Guns carries Tannerite in our Ogden, Utah and Boise, Idaho retail locations. Due to federal shipping regulations, Tannerite is available for in-store purchase only and cannot be shipped.

How Tannerite Works

Tannerite is a binary explosive—meaning it consists of two components that are shipped and stored separately and are each independently non-explosive. The oxidizer (ammonium nitrate) and the fuel (aluminum powder) are mixed immediately before use, producing a compound that is highly insensitive to heat, shock, and friction but will detonate when struck by a bullet traveling at approximately 2,000 fps or faster. This sensitivity threshold means that pistol bullets and most subsonic rifle loads will not detonate the target—it requires a centerfire rifle cartridge at adequate velocity to initiate detonation. Once mixed, Tannerite should be used that day and not stored.

Tannerite Sizes and Configurations

Tannerite is available in several configurations. The 1/2 lb target is the most common for standard range use—it produces a satisfying explosion and vapor cloud visible at 100–300 yards without being excessively large. The 1 lb target produces a larger explosion appropriate for long-range practice at 300+ yards where a 1/2 lb charge might be difficult to see clearly. The 2 lb target is the largest single target legal for civilian purchase under federal ATF guidelines—charges larger than 2 lbs are restricted. Tannerite also sells multi-packs and competition kits for shooters who run multiple targets in a session. For a standard range day with a centerfire rifle, 1/2 lb targets at 100–200 yards is the most practical and enjoyable setup.

Tannerite Safety Rules

Tannerite is safe when used correctly but must be treated with respect as an explosive material. The ATF requires a minimum safe distance of 100 yards between the shooter and any Tannerite target. Larger charges require greater distances—200 yards is recommended for 1 lb targets and the maximum 2 lb targets should only be engaged at 300+ yards. Never place Tannerite inside containers, rocks, or any structure that could produce shrapnel when detonated—the explosion itself is safe but secondary projectiles from contained detonations are dangerous. Always mix Tannerite in the open, use only the provided components, and never attempt to modify, enhance, or repackage the product. Tannerite is legal in most states but check your local regulations before purchase.

What Rifles Work with Tannerite

Any centerfire rifle cartridge producing 2,000+ fps at the target distance will detonate Tannerite reliably. The AR-15 in 5.56 NATO or .223 Remington is the most popular choice for Tannerite shooting—fast, flat-shooting, and with enough velocity at 200 yards to reliably initiate detonation. The .308 Winchester, 6.5 Creedmoor, and other centerfire rifle cartridges work equally well. Pistol calibers, .22 LR, and most subsonic loads will not detonate Tannerite due to insufficient impact velocity. For shooters who want to extend their effective Tannerite range beyond 300 yards, high-velocity rifle cartridges like the 6.5 Creedmoor maintain adequate velocity further than .223.

Tannerite Alternatives and Competing Binary Targets

While Tannerite is the most recognized brand, several competing binary explosive targets are available including Shockwave Technologies, POW targets, and others. All function on the same binary explosive principle. Tannerite's original formulation and quality control have maintained its reputation as the standard, but competing products are available at similar or lower price points. For a shooter who simply wants a reliable reactive target for range use, the Tannerite brand is the safest and most proven choice given its 30-year track record and consistent manufacturing standards.
