Sig Sauer P229

The Sig Sauer P229 is a compact double-action/single-action semi-automatic pistol built on the alloy-framed P-Series platform—a slightly shorter and lighter companion to the full-size P226. Chambered in 9mm, .357 SIG, and .40 S&W, the P229 was the first Sig pistol manufactured entirely in the United States and has served as the standard sidearm of the US Secret Service, Department of Homeland Security, and numerous law enforcement agencies since the early 1990s.

P229 vs. P226: Compact vs. Full-Size P-Series

The P226 and P229 share the same fundamental DA/SA action, trigger geometry, and P-Series heritage. The P229 is shorter (7.08″ vs. 7.7″), lighter (32 oz vs. 34 oz), and has a shorter grip that holds 15 rounds in 9mm vs. the P226’s 15+1 (both current production P229 and P226 9mm hold 15+1). The P229 was originally designed around the .357 SIG and .40 S&W cartridges, which required a heavier slide than the P226’s steel slide—the P229’s machined stainless steel slide is its most visually distinctive feature. For most concealed carry and duty use, the P229 is the more practical of the two. For a range gun or full-size duty pistol where grip length isn’t a constraint, the P226 is equally excellent.

P229 Caliber Options: 9mm, .357 SIG, and .40 S&W

The P229 is available in all three of its original chamberings, and caliber conversion between .357 SIG and .40 S&W is simple—a barrel swap alone converts between the two since the magazines are compatible. The 9mm P229 holds 15+1 rounds, making it the highest-capacity option with the lightest recoil and lowest ammunition cost. The .357 SIG delivers outstanding velocity and barrier penetration but at significantly higher ammunition cost. The .40 S&W splits the difference. Most current buyers choose the 9mm P229 given modern 9mm’s terminal performance parity with the other calibers at lower cost and higher capacity—but agency shooters whose organizations issue .357 SIG or .40 have excellent reasons to maintain those calibers.

P229 Law Enforcement History

The P229’s law enforcement lineage is remarkable. The US Secret Service adopted it as their primary sidearm in .357 SIG, which remains among the strongest endorsements any pistol has received. The Department of Homeland Security, Immigration and Customs Enforcement, and numerous federal, state, and local agencies have issued the P229 in both .357 SIG and .40 S&W. This extensive duty service has validated the P229’s reliability under real-world conditions across millions of rounds and decades of operational use. The pistol’s real-world track record is a significant argument for its continued use and purchase in an era when newer designs compete for the same role.

P229 vs. P320 Compact: Old Guard vs. New Generation

Sig’s P320 Compact has largely replaced the P229 in new agency procurements, offering a modular striker-fired design with a lighter trigger, higher capacity in some configurations, and the Army’s M17/M18 pedigree. The P229’s DA/SA trigger provides a longer, heavier first pull that some operators prefer as a deliberate firing decision requirement. The P229’s all-metal construction is heavier but provides a more substantial feel that many shooters prefer. For a buyer choosing between the two today, the P320 Compact is the more modern and modular platform. For a buyer who prefers DA/SA mechanics, metal construction, and the P229’s proven duty record, the P229 remains fully competitive.

P229 Carry and Holster Options

The P229 is one of the most heavily supported pistols in the duty and concealed carry holster market. Safariland’s ALS and GLS duty holsters, Galco’s leather carry options, and Alien Gear’s IWB holsters all have extensive P229-specific lines. The P229’s 32 oz weight is heavy by modern carry standards but the metal frame absorbs felt recoil extremely well, making it a pleasant gun to shoot even with .357 SIG loads. The SRT (Short Reset Trigger) available on P229 variants reduces the single-action reset distance for faster follow-up shots. Night sights from Trijicon, SIGLITE, and AmeriGlo are available in the P229’s dovetail cuts.
