Shooting Rests

A shooting rest removes human error from the zeroing and load development process—holding the rifle steady so that every variable except ammunition performance is eliminated. Quality shooting rests range from simple sandbags to precision mechanical bench rests used by competitive benchrest shooters, with a wide range of options between for hunters zeroing scopes, precision rifle shooters developing loads, and range shooters who want to shoot more consistently. Impact Guns carries bench rests, sandbags, squeeze bags, front rest systems, and rifle sled rests for every application and budget.

Sandbags and Squeeze Bags: The Fundamentals

Sandbags and squeeze bags are the most versatile and portable shooting support option. A front bag under the forend and a rear bag under the stock provide a stable two-point rest that allows fine elevation adjustment by squeezing the rear bag. Quality bags from Protektor, Armageddon Gear, and similar manufacturers use durable leather or synthetic covers filled with sand, millet, or polymer beads. For PRS competition and field shooting, purpose-designed squeeze bags in various shapes (small, medium, and large beanies) support the rifle in field positions. For hunters zeroing rifles before season, a basic front and rear sandbag setup on a bench is the most practical zeroing solution.

Front Rests and Mechanical Bench Rests

Mechanical front rests (Caldwell Lead Sled, Sinclair, and similar) clamp the rifle forend and provide precise elevation adjustment via a screw mechanism, allowing repeatable hold positions for load development. Lead sled-style rests use weight in a tray to absorb recoil, dramatically reducing felt recoil for heavy magnum rifles during extended bench sessions. For benchrest competition and serious load development where the rest must maintain consistent hold pressure shot to shot, a quality mechanical front rest is worth the investment. For casual zeroing, a sandbag front rest achieves the same practical result at far lower cost.

Bipods vs. Rests: Knowing When to Use Each

Shooting rests are optimized for bench use where portability doesn’t matter. Bipods are field-portable supports that attach directly to the rifle for prone and positional shooting. For bench work, load development, and zeroing, a rest is more stable and practical than a bipod. For field hunting, PRS competition, and any shooting that happens off a bench, a bipod is the appropriate tool. Many precision shooters use both: a quality rest for bench development work and a bipod for field use. See also: Bipods & Shooting Rests.
