Handgun Safes
A handgun safe serves a specific and critical purpose: keeping your home defense pistol immediately accessible to you while securing it against unauthorized access. The best handgun safe balances quick access speed with reliable security—a safe that takes 30 seconds to open is useless in an emergency, and a safe with no security is not a safe at all. Handgun safes range from simple cable locks to sophisticated biometric units, and the right choice depends on where you’re placing it, who you need to keep out, and how fast you need to get in.

Quick-Access vs. Long-Term Storage Handgun Safes
Handgun safes divide into two functional categories. Quick-access safes are designed for immediate retrieval—they prioritize single-motion opening (biometric, RFID, or push-button) and are sized for one or two handguns maximum. They’re meant to sit on a nightstand, mount under a desk, or fit inside a vehicle. Long-term storage handgun safes hold multiple handguns with heavier steel construction and more secure locking mechanisms, but sacrifice the sub-second access speed of quick-access designs. For home defense, quick-access is almost always the right category. For storing handguns you don’t carry regularly, a long-term storage safe or a section of a larger gun safe is appropriate.
Nightstand and Bedside Handgun Safes
The most common handgun safe placement is beside the bed, where a home defense firearm needs to be accessible in seconds at 2am in complete darkness. Biometric nightstand safes that open on fingerprint touch are ideal for this application—no code to remember under stress, no fumbling for a key. Look for safes with an interior light, a backup keypad or key entry in case the biometric fails, and a mounting option to prevent the safe from being grabbed and carried off. The safe should be large enough for your pistol with a mounted light if you run one.
Vehicle Handgun Safes
Vehicle handgun safes secure a pistol in your car or truck during transport, preventing both theft and unauthorized access. Most vehicle safes use a steel cable to anchor to the seat rail or other fixed point, preventing removal while allowing the safe to remain in the vehicle. Biometric and keypad vehicle safes provide quick access at a traffic stop or when returning to the vehicle. For those who carry concealed and drive frequently, a vehicle safe for when you enter a gun-free zone (leaving the firearm secured rather than leaving it unsecured) is a practical necessity.
What Size Handgun Safe Do You Need?
Measure your handgun—especially if it has a weapon-mounted light or extended magazine basepad—before buying a handgun safe. Many handgun safes are sized for compact pistols and may not fit a full-size pistol with a Streamlight TLR-7 or similar light attached. If you run a light on your home defense pistol (which is strongly recommended), verify the safe’s interior dimensions accommodate the full pistol-plus-light combination before purchasing. Depth and height are the most commonly overlooked dimensions for light-equipped pistols.
