Buying a suppressor in 2026 is simpler and more affordable than it has ever been. The $200 NFA tax stamp was eliminated effective January 1, 2026 — the barrier that kept millions of shooters from making the purchase is gone. Suppressors still require ATF Form 4 registration and approval, but the process is straightforward, and Impact Guns has helped thousands of customers complete it successfully since 1992. This guide walks you through every step from choosing your suppressor to taking it home.
What Changed in 2026: The $0 Tax Stamp
Prior to 2026, every suppressor transfer required a $200 NFA tax stamp paid to the ATF — a fee unchanged since 1934. The “Big Beautiful Bill” signed in July 2025 eliminated this fee effective January 1, 2026. Suppressors remain NFA-regulated items requiring ATF Form 4 approval and registration, but the $200 cost is now $0. The ATF processed approximately 150,000 suppressor e-Forms on January 1, 2026 alone — a single-day record reflecting the scale of pent-up demand the fee elimination unlocked. There has never been a better time to purchase a suppressor.
Is Your State Suppressor-Legal?
Before going further, confirm that suppressors are legal in your state. Despite the federal fee elimination, suppressors remain prohibited at the state level in the following states:
California — Delaware — Hawaii — Illinois — Massachusetts — New Jersey — New York — Rhode Island — Washington D.C.
Residents of these states cannot legally purchase or possess suppressors. All other U.S. states permit civilian suppressor ownership for buyers who complete the federal Form 4 process. If you’re unsure, contact us at 800-917-7137 and we can confirm your state’s status.
Step 1 — Choose Your Suppressor
Start by identifying what host firearms you want to suppress and their calibers. Suppressors are caliber-rated — a 9mm pistol can won’t work on a 5.56 rifle. Key specs to match are caliber rating, barrel thread pitch, and outer diameter (to clear your handguard). For buyers who want one suppressor to cover multiple guns, a multi-caliber design like the SilencerCo Hybrid 46M, Rugged Obsidian 45, or Dead Air Sandman covers the broadest range from a single Form 4 registration. Browse our full suppressors for sale or call us and we’ll match you to the right unit for your host firearms.
Step 2 — Purchase and Initiate the Transfer
Once you’ve selected your suppressor, purchase it through Impact Guns. We are a licensed Class III SOT dealer and handle all aspects of the NFA transfer process. If you’re not local to our Utah location, we can ship your suppressor to a licensed FFL/SOT dealer near you who will receive the transfer on your behalf. Use our FFL dealer lookup to find a receiving dealer. Your suppressor stays with us or with the receiving dealer throughout the approval process — you cannot take possession until the Form 4 is approved.
Step 3 — Complete the ATF Form 4
The ATF Form 4 (Application for Tax Paid Transfer and Registration of Firearm) is the federal paperwork required to transfer a suppressor to an individual buyer. Since the $200 tax stamp was eliminated in 2026, the form is submitted with a $0 payment. You’ll need your full legal name, address, date of birth, citizenship status, and a passport-style photo. The form can be submitted electronically via the ATF’s eForms system — significantly faster than paper — or on paper. Impact Guns submits the dealer portion of the Form 4 on your behalf. A fingerprint card may be required. Our staff will walk you through every field.
Step 4 — Wait for ATF Approval
After Form 4 submission, the ATF conducts a background check and processes the registration. Electronic eForms submissions are approved faster than paper forms — historically 30–90 days under normal conditions, though 2026 processing times may be longer due to the unprecedented application surge following the tax stamp elimination. You’ll receive a copy of the approved Form 4 when the ATF completes the transfer. Your suppressor remains at Impact Guns or the receiving dealer during this period. We’ll notify you as soon as your approval comes through.
Step 5 — Take Possession
Once your approved Form 4 is returned, you pick up your suppressor. Keep the original approved Form 4 with your suppressor at all times — it is your proof of legal registration and must be available if law enforcement requests it. Keep a digital copy as a backup. Your suppressor is now legally yours to use on any host firearm chambered for its rated calibers. The NFA registration is permanent and tied to you individually. To transfer the suppressor to another person in the future, a new Form 4 must be submitted.
Should You Use a Suppressor Trust?
A suppressor trust (NFA trust) is a legal entity that can hold NFA items. Trusts allow multiple named individuals — family members, shooting partners — to legally possess and use the suppressor without the registered owner present. With the $200 fee eliminated, the financial argument for trusts has changed, but the multi-user access benefit remains valuable for households where more than one person will use the suppressor. Trust setup typically costs $100–$200 through a firearms attorney or NFA trust service. Call us and we can point you to trust services we’ve worked with successfully.
