Glock 17
The Glock 17 is the most widely issued duty pistol in the world — carried by more law enforcement agencies, military units, and government organizations than any other handgun. Introduced in 1982 as the original Glock, the G17 set the standard for polymer-frame striker-fired pistols and has been refined through six generations without abandoning the core principles that made it legendary. With 17+1 rounds of 9mm, the Safe Action trigger system, and a reliability record unmatched in the industry, the G17 remains the benchmark full-size service pistol.

Glock 17 Gen 5: What Changed and Why It Matters
The Gen 5 is the current production G17 and the most refined version of the platform. Key Gen 5 improvements over previous generations: the Marksman barrel with enhanced polygonal rifling delivers measurably better accuracy — typically 2–2.5″ groups at 25 yards vs. 3″+ from Gen 3/4. The nDLC finish is more scratch and corrosion resistant than the original Tenifer coating. The flared magwell speeds reloads under pressure. The ambidextrous slide stop assists left-handed shooters. And the removal of finger grooves from the grip produces a cleaner grip that fits more hand shapes. For a new buyer, Gen 5 is the right choice. Gen 3 and Gen 4 variants remain available for those with specific generation preferences.
Glock 17 Gen 5 MOS: The Optics-Ready Duty Standard
The G17 Gen 5 MOS (Modular Optic System) adds a factory optics cut compatible with Aimpoint Acro P-2, Shield RMSc, Trijicon RMR, and other footprints via included adapter plates. For any buyer planning to add a red dot — and most duty and competition shooters should be — the MOS is the right choice over aftermarket slide milling. The factory cut is more secure, lower-profile, and covered under Glock’s warranty. Paired with a Holosun 507C or Trijicon RMR, the G17 Gen 5 MOS is one of the most proven optic-equipped duty setups available. See our handgun optic packages for factory-bundled options.
Glock 17 vs. Glock 19: Choosing Your G-Size
The most common Glock question is G17 vs. G19. The G17 is 0.67″ longer and 0.43″ taller than the G19 — differences that matter for concealed carry but are irrelevant for duty and competition use. The G17’s advantages: 17+1 flush capacity vs. 15+1, longer sight radius for precision shooting, and a more secure two-handed grip. The G19’s advantages: more concealable, still accepts G17 magazines. For duty carry, competition, and home defense where concealment isn’t a concern, G17. For concealed carry as the primary use, G19. For a side-by-side comparison, see our Glock 17 vs. Glock 19 page.
Glock 17 for Competition: USPSA, IDPA & 3-Gun
The G17 is legal in USPSA Production division (17-round magazines meet Production’s capacity requirements), IDPA SSP and ESP, and virtually every other competitive shooting format. A Gen 5 G17 with a drop-in trigger from Timney or ZEV, night sights, and a quality holster from Safariland is a competitive Production division setup without additional investment. The G17 Gen 5 MOS in USPSA Carry Optics with a Holosun 507C is one of the most common setups in that division. For Open division, the G17 platform with a compensator and mounted optic is fully legal.
Glock 17 Reliability: The Numbers Behind the Legend
The Glock 17’s reliability reputation isn’t marketing — it’s documented by military and police testing across dozens of countries. The Austrian Army, which adopted the G17 in 1982, has conducted sustained endurance testing that produced documented round counts in the hundreds of thousands before mechanical failure. Law enforcement agencies report service intervals of 50,000+ rounds between required parts replacements. The polymer frame doesn’t rust, the Tenifer/nDLC finish is corrosion-resistant to salt water, and the simple 34-part action has minimal components to fail. For a duty or defensive pistol where reliability is non-negotiable, no platform has a more documented track record.
