What Is the Draco?
The Draco is a semi-automatic AK-pattern pistol manufactured in Romania and imported by Century Arms International. Chambered in 7.62x39mm — the original AK-47 cartridge — the Draco delivers full AK power in a pistol format. It uses standard AK-47 magazines, accepts AK furniture and accessories, and operates on the same proven long-stroke gas piston system as the full-size AK-47. It is legally classified as a pistol, not a rifle, because it lacks a stock and has a barrel under 16 inches.
Draco Model Guide
Draco (Full-Size, 12.25" barrel) — The original. Available in hardwood furniture (traditional) and black polymer variants. The most popular and most available configuration. Accepts standard 30-round AK-47 magazines.
Mini Draco (7.75" barrel) — A shorter, more compact version of the full-size Draco. Still 7.62x39, still accepts standard AK magazines, but more maneuverable and easier to run with a stabilizing brace.
Micro Draco (6.25" barrel) — The most compact Draco. Maximum maneuverability in the smallest possible AK package. Higher muzzle blast and flash than longer variants — hearing and eye protection are strongly recommended.
Black Draco — The standard Draco in all-black polymer furniture. One of our most-searched configurations — if you’ve heard of the “Black Draco” this is it.
CUGIR Romanian Micro Draco — Imported directly from the CUGIR Arsenal in Romania, the same factory that has produced AK-pattern weapons since the Cold War. Hardwood furniture, traditional Romanian construction.
Draco NAK9 (9mm) — The Draco platform chambered in 9mm, compatible with Glock 17 magazines. Lower recoil and cheaper to shoot than 7.62x39, while keeping the AK ergonomics and manual of arms.
What People Mean by "Draco," "Choppa," and Related Terms
The Draco pistol has become one of the most culturally referenced firearms in America. “Draco,” “Choppa,” “Chop,” and “Mini Chop” all refer to AK-pattern pistols of this type — most commonly the Century Arms Draco series. If you searched any of these terms, you’re in the right place.
Legal Considerations
Draco pistols are classified as pistols under federal law. They can be owned in most states without any special registration beyond a standard background check. However, adding a vertical foregrip to a pistol-classified firearm creates an “Any Other Weapon” (AOW) requiring NFA registration — use an angled foregrip instead. Adding a stock to a pistol creates a short-barreled rifle (SBR) requiring NFA Form 4 registration. A pistol stabilizing brace is legal without NFA registration. Check your state laws — some states have restrictions on AK-pattern pistols.
Accessories
Popular Draco accessories include pistol stabilizing braces (SB Tactical, KAK Shockwave), angled foregrips, extended 30-round and 40-round AK magazines, and Picatinny rail systems for optics and lights. All standard AK-47 magazines are compatible with 7.62x39 Draco variants.
