AK-47 Rifles

Impact Guns has been selling AK-47 pattern rifles since 1992, and they remain one of our most popular rifle categories. The AK platform — originally designed by Mikhail Kalashnikov in 1947 — is legendary for its reliability under adverse conditions, its hard-hitting 7.62x39mm cartridge, and the wide variety of configurations available from manufacturers around the world. We carry AK rifles from Riley Defense, Pioneer Arms, Zastava, Arsenal, Century Arms, and more.

AK-47 vs. AK-74 vs. AKM: What’s the Difference?

AK-47 — The original, chambered in 7.62x39mm. The term is used loosely today to describe almost any AK-pattern rifle in 7.62x39. Most AK rifles sold in the U.S. are technically AKMs (modernized AKs) but marketed as AK-47s.

AKM — The modernized AK-47, introduced in 1959. Stamped receiver instead of milled, lighter weight, same 7.62x39mm caliber. The vast majority of AK-pattern rifles in existence are AKMs. Most U.S.-market AKs are AKM variants.

AK-74 — The Soviet upgrade chambered in 5.45x39mm. Flatter shooting, less recoil, smaller round. Less common in the U.S. civilian market but available. Not compatible with AK-47/AKM magazines.

Caliber Guide

7.62x39mm — The original AK caliber and overwhelmingly the most popular. Hard-hitting at moderate ranges, affordable practice ammo, and excellent for home defense and deer hunting inside 200 yards. The right choice for most buyers.

5.56 NATO / .223 — A handful of AK-pattern rifles (like the Zastava ZPAP85) are chambered in 5.56. These use standard AR-15 magazines and appeal to buyers who want AK ergonomics with cheaper, more available ammo.

5.45x39mm — The AK-74 caliber. Excellent ballistics, lower recoil than 7.62x39. Ammo availability has improved but remains less common than 7.62x39.

Country of Origin: Why It Matters

Serbian (Zastava) — Zastava ZPAPM70 and ZPAPM90 are among the best value full-size AK rifles available. Excellent quality, proven reliability, and very popular. One of our most-stocked AK lines.

Bulgarian (Arsenal) — Arsenal SAM7R and SLR series are premium-tier AKs with milled or quality stamped receivers. Best-in-class fit and finish. Higher price point, worth every dollar.

American (Riley Defense, Pioneer Arms) — Domestically produced AKs have improved significantly. Riley Defense RAK-47 offers excellent quality at a competitive price. Pioneer Arms Sporter is a solid budget option.

Romanian (Century Arms) — Century’s WASR-10 and VSKA lines are the most accessible entry points. Reliable, functional, and affordable. Fit and finish won’t match Serbian or Bulgarian but they run.
