.45 ACP Ammo
The .45 ACP—Automatic Colt Pistol—has been a standard American military and law enforcement cartridge since 1911 and remains one of the most proven defensive handgun calibers ever developed. It fires a large-diameter, heavy bullet at moderate velocity, delivering reliable expansion and significant energy transfer from quality hollow point loads. Whether you shoot a classic 1911, a Glock 21, or an HK USP, we carry a full selection of .45 ACP FMJ practice loads and defensive hollow points from all major manufacturers.

Ballistics Overview
The .45 ACP typically fires a 185–230 grain bullet at 830–1,050 fps. The standard 230-grain FMJ load—essentially unchanged since 1911—runs around 850 fps and is the most common practice load. Lighter 185-grain +P loads push closer to 1,050 fps with increased energy. The .45’s large diameter compensates for its moderate velocity; a 230-grain hollow point at 900 fps produces a large wound channel and reliable terminal performance. Felt recoil is heavier than 9mm but manageable in a full-size pistol with proper technique.
FMJ Practice Loads
Federal, Winchester, Remington, and Magtech all produce reliable 230-grain FMJ loads at accessible price points. The 230-grain FMJ is standard for .45 ACP practice and functions reliably in virtually every .45 platform. Buy in bulk—500 rounds at a time—to minimize cost. Brass-case FMJ is worth the premium if you reload; .45 ACP brass is among the most reloadable of all pistol calibers and the cost savings over many reloads are significant compared to buying factory ammunition each time.
Defensive Hollow Points
Federal HST 230gr standard pressure is the most commonly recommended .45 ACP defensive load, with consistent expansion and penetration across test conditions. Speer Gold Dot 230gr, Hornady Critical Defense 185gr FTX, and Remington Golden Saber 185gr are all proven performers. The .45 ACP’s large diameter means even standard-pressure hollow points expand reliably at moderate velocity. Confirm your pistol’s +P rating before using overpressure loads regularly; some 1911 designs are not rated for sustained +P use.
.45 ACP vs. 9mm
Modern 9mm hollow points match .45 ACP terminal performance closely in ballistic gelatin testing, while offering better capacity and lower recoil. That said, the .45 ACP has a proven track record over more than a century, and the argument for a large, heavy, slow-moving bullet remains valid. If you already shoot a .45 and shoot it well, there’s no compelling performance reason to switch. Platform preference and shooting proficiency matter more than caliber differences in any practical defensive scenario.
Pricing and Availability
The .45 ACP is priced higher than 9mm per round due to the larger case and heavier projectile. FMJ typically runs $0.35–$0.55 per round; quality defensive hollow points run $0.80–$1.25. Availability is generally reliable from all major manufacturers. Buying in bulk (500 rounds or more) is the standard approach for practice ammo. Budget steel-case .45 ACP is less widely available than in 9mm, so expect to pay closer to the higher end of pistol caliber pricing for most options.
