The MAX-9 is the current-generation replacement with a 10+1 capacity, optics-ready slide, and updated ergonomics in a similarly compact package. The LC9s remains in production and is a proven quantity with years of real-world carry data behind it. If maximum capacity and optics-readiness matter, the MAX-9 is the better current option. Ammunition and Reliability

The LC9 and LC9s feed reliably with standard pressure and +P 9mm across most bullet profiles. Hollow point defensive loads from Federal, Speer, and Hornady all function reliably. The single-stack magazine and slim frame mean the feed path is less tolerant of unusual bullet geometries than a wider double-stack pistol — stick to round-nose or standard hollow point profiles and avoid extremely wide or flat-nose bullets. Federal HST 124-grain +P and Speer Gold Dot 124-grain are the most commonly recommended carry loads. Run at least 200 rounds of your chosen defensive ammunition before trusting the gun for carry. The 7-round capacity is a meaningful limitation — carry a spare magazine.
