Ruger LC9
The Ruger LC9 and LC9s are slim, lightweight 9mm pistols purpose-built for concealed carry — at just 0.9” wide and 17.2 oz. unloaded, they’re among the most concealable 9mm pistols available. The LC9 features a traditional double-action hammer-fired mechanism while the LC9s uses a striker-fired action for a lighter, more consistent trigger pull. Both hold 7+1 rounds of 9mm in a single-stack magazine and have earned a reputation for reliable function and genuine everyday carry comfort over years of real-world use.

LC9 vs. LC9s: What’s the Difference?
The LC9 is hammer-fired with a double-action only trigger — a long, heavier pull that some shooters prefer for a carry gun as an additional layer of security. The LC9s replaces the hammer mechanism with a striker-fired system, producing a shorter, lighter, more consistent trigger pull similar to a Glock or SIG striker-fired pistol. Both guns are dimensionally identical and use the same magazines. For most buyers, the LC9s is the practical choice — its trigger is easier to shoot accurately and the lighter pull is an advantage in defensive situations. The LC9 makes sense for shooters who specifically prefer a long double-action pull or who are transitioning from a revolver.
Concealed Carry: Why the LC9s Works
The LC9s’s appeal is straightforward: at 0.9” wide, 6.0” long, and 17.2 oz. unloaded, it disappears in an IWB holster even under a light t-shirt. The single-stack 7-round magazine keeps the grip slim enough for pocket carry in larger pockets with the right holster. The manual thumb safety and loaded chamber indicator are standard features that some carry buyers value. Holster support is extensive — the LC9s has been in production long enough that virtually every major holster maker offers direct-fit options. For buyers who prioritize concealability above all else and want a proven 9mm platform, the LC9s remains one of the strongest options in its class despite being an older design.
LC9s vs. Ruger MAX-9 and EC9s: Understanding the Ruger Lineup
Ruger has expanded their compact 9mm lineup since the LC9s was introduced. The EC9s is essentially a simplified LC9s at a lower price point — same dimensions, fewer features (fixed sights, no manual safety option). The MAX-9 is the current-generation replacement with a 10+1 capacity, optics-ready slide, and updated ergonomics in a similarly compact package. The LC9s remains in production and is a proven quantity with years of real-world carry data behind it. If maximum capacity and optics-readiness matter, the MAX-9 is the better current option. If you want a proven, affordable, slim carry 9mm with a known track record, the LC9s delivers.
Ammunition and Reliability
The LC9 and LC9s feed reliably with standard pressure and +P 9mm across most bullet profiles. Hollow point defensive loads from Federal, Speer, and Hornady all function reliably. The single-stack magazine and slim frame mean the feed path is less tolerant of unusual bullet geometries than a wider double-stack pistol — stick to round-nose or standard hollow point profiles and avoid extremely wide or flat-nose bullets. Federal HST 124-grain +P and Speer Gold Dot 124-grain are the most commonly recommended carry loads. Run at least 200 rounds of your chosen defensive ammunition before trusting the gun for carry. The 7-round capacity is a meaningful limitation — carry a spare magazine.
Accessories and Upgrades
The LC9 and LC9s have a mature aftermarket. Crimson Trace and LaserMax offer laser grip options that are popular with buyers who want an aiming system without adding a rail-mounted light. Extended 9-round magazines from Ruger provide a grip extension for shooters with larger hands. The manual safety can be removed by a gunsmith if preferred. Night sights from XS Sight Systems and Trijicon are available as direct-fit upgrades. For a holster, Vedder LightTuck, Alien Gear ShapeShift, and Galco Stow-N-Go all offer direct-fit LC9s options.
